Marvel Studios Phase 4 Closing Film, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever now hosts Namor the Sub-Mariner by Tenoch Huerta. And as grand as his name sounds, his role in the film is even grander. Namor’s arrival was heralded with the trailer’s first look at the Atlantean prince. He was one of the first and most powerful comic book characters ever, the first known anti-hero, and also the first comic book character to be imbued with the ability to fly. And now that he’s arrived in the MCU, the outside noise is enough to announce the power he announces.

The origin of Namor the submarine in Marvel
Named Namor McKenzie, the human-Atlantean hybrid was born from the tragic union between Leonard McKenzie, a sea captain and human explorer, and Fen, an Atlantean princess. The character, created by Bill Everett, first appeared in Timely Comics, the predecessor to Marvel Comics in October 1939, in the issue titled Marvel Comics #1. His powers include aquatic telepathy, accelerated healing, the ability to mimic the powers of underwater creatures (such as firing electric bolts while channeling an electric eel), superhuman speed, hydrokinesis, echolocation, and durability .

Among all of his incredible, super-powered, and awesome abilities and accomplishments, Namor, also known as the “Avenging Son”, stands out more because of his frequent battle against surface dwellers for perceived transgressions against the marine world and its inhabitants, an idea that people have only recently become more aware of and are speaking out about due to climate change. Of all the accomplishments, however, Namor’s arrival in the MCU becomes even more engrossing to audiences due to his culturally dominant appearance thanks to the presence of Tenoch Huerta.
In his first role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tenoch and his character, Namor, make their debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever when he steps out of his world and declares war on the surface. The actor was also very vocal about portraying earlier during Marvel’s Comic-Con featurette of black panther 2 and his message was widely praised and applauded. Recently, the cover of Empire featured Angela Bassett, Letitia Wright, and Tenoch Huerta in their Wakandan garb, and most striking of all was Huerta’s portrayal of Mexican culture in her appearance as Namor.

Online feud erupts over Tenoch Huerta’s Namor
As November approaches, there is growing interest in press and print for Marvel’s long-awaited blockbuster, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The film was even higher in mass opinion due to the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman. In tribute and remembrance of the actor who heralded the MCU’s first black superhero with his incredibly successful solo film, the crowd watched the MCU’s every move with microscopic clarity.
In a new development, however, Namor’s Mexican portrayal is what caught the public’s attention. Social media is now increasingly divided between those who love the depiction and those who claim Marvel’s offensive “brown wash” of the comic book character.

He looks like Namor. I think that’s the coolest thing – if you showed me a picture of this guy and said “he plays a character in the MCU” I would know in a heartbeat that it was Namor. Damn. So excited to finally have this dude on the big screen.

The plot so far reveals Namor’s arrival to declare war on the surface world and Queen Ramonda, Shuri, Nakia, Okoye, M’Baku and the Dora Milaje fight to protect their nation, mourning the death of their king and leader, T’ Challa, while dealing with global politics and charting a new course for Wakanda.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever premieres on November 11, 2022.
