Brace yourself, House of the Dragon fans, because you’ll soon meet another badass character you’ll love to hate. This is none other than Alicent’s second son, Aemond Targaryen. And let me point out an interesting fact, Aemond is simply Daemon with the quirky ‘d’ at the end. They are essentially anagrams. So let’s explore who Aemond Targaryen is and how he’ll be the perfect rival to fan-favorite Daemon Targaryen.
Who is Aemond Targaryen?
Aemond Targaryen, the second son of King Viserys and Queen Alicent Hightower was one of the fiercest Targaryens of all time. He lost his eye when he was only 10 years old during a fight with Rhaenyra’s sons when Lucerys slashed her eye with a dagger. Since then, their enmity began. He continued to mock them as “the three strong boys” referring to the rumor illicit relationship between Rhaenyra and Harwin Strong. From then on, he wore a sapphire eye and often covered it with an eye patch that can be seen in the House of the Dragon trailers.
Aemond’s bravery and courage were unparalleled when he claimed the mightiest dragon Vhagar when he was only 10 years old. Without showing even an ounce of fear, he jumped on Vhagar and took him up into the sky. Despite his ruthless and sadistic nature, his loyalty to his brother and heir Aegon was unwavering. He was a brilliant swordsman and a ruthless man. Aemond and Aegon even killed Rhaenys Targaryen with her dragon Meleys. He single-handedly advanced the cause of the greens more than any other knight or fighter.
Why is it called the kinslayer?
Aemond had lost his eye to Lucerys Velaryon at a very young age. He never forgot that and wanted revenge. When Lucerys and Aemond were at Storm’s End to gain Borros Baratheon as an ally, they bump into each other once more as Aemond threatens revenge, eye for eye. However, Borros forbade them to fight under his watch. Thus, Aemond followed Lucerys aboard Vhagar and slew him and his dragon Arrax. Rumor has it that he gouged out both his eyes as well as retaliation. Thus, it is called the kinslayer. A kinslayer is basically one who kills his own family. It is supposed to be a cursed action that is condemned by most. Even Alicent and Otto were horrified by his actions though Aegon supported his feelings and encouraged him further.
After that, Daemon swore to Rhaenyra, his wife, that he would take revenge and claim a son for a son. In fact, Aemond would go on to sternly regret his actions as hell has no fury like Daemon Targaryen despised!
Aemond and Daemon are anagrams
In more ways than one, Aemond is the perfect opponent for Daemon Targaryen. So far, we’ve seen the reckless, rebellious demon quickly step into the shoes of the big bad. However, things will surely change once Aemond enters the House of the Dragon. Aemond Targaryen is as ruthless as Daemon but even more sadistic. Their names are anagrams of each other, which alludes to the fact that they are quite similar yet complete Civil War opposites. In fact, their rivalry is to death. They are both arrogant, wild, unbalanced and would stop at nothing to win.
Daemon is the kind of warrior who would rather sacrifice his life than accept help from others. Thus, no one could go against him except Aemond. Moreover, even as a fighter, Aemond was honed and polished by none other than Criston Cole and became the Greens best warrior, capable enough to give Daemon a run for his money. They are both absolutely evil and have committed despicable acts. Like Aemond killing his 14 year old and then Daemon sending Blood and Cheese to kill Aegon’s 6 year old. They are also perfectly matched to their respective dragons Caraxes and Vhagar. Without giving too much away, they have an epic fight scene later in the books that really excites me.
