Larys Strong, Lord of Harrenhal and son of Lyonel Strong, Hand of the King was considered Queen Alicent’s chief adviser. He got a short screen time in the fifth episode of House of the Dragon, where we saw him talking to Queen Alicent about his father and Rhaenyra. After a 10-year jump in the series for the sixth episode, we finally see some death plot stuff.
Larys Strong not only killed his father but also his brother, Ser Harwin Strong, by starting a fire in Harranhal Castle. He thinks he did this to curry favor with Queen Alicent, but even she was shocked by Lord Larys’ reciprocal actions. Why did he kill his father and brother anyway? The queen’s wish was to have someone in the audience hall and in the palace to take her to her side. And that’s why she expressed her feelings of missing her father.

She never wanted Larys to kill Lyonel and Harwin to force the king to recall Ser Otto Hightower. Alicent will most likely present her father’s name to be rehired as Hand of the King. And since there are no other candidates worthy of competing, King could accept it. And it will help resume Queen’s quest to get Aegon to take the Iron Throne.
But is that the only reason Larys killed his exit for the Queen? Was that the only reason Larys was willing to kill his own family? Fans may sense something more perverted in this mindset.

There are several reasons why this could have happened, one is to curry favor with the Queen as stated above. But other than that, one obvious reason is that he wants the seat of Harrenhal to be open to inheritance. And as Lyonel’s older brother and heir, Ser Harwin would have been a threat to his personal interests. So, it seemed like a win-win situation for Larys, as he can portray that he did the killings to impress Queen Alicent, while fulfilling his own personal vendetta.
Ser Harwin Strong was rumored to be the father of Princess Rhaenyra’s three children and was also a secret lover. And that’s what makes him protective of Rhaenyra Targaryen, who is once again a threat to Alicent and her quest into the future. So eliminating him will pick one more enemy for dethroning Rhaenyra and making Aegon her next king.
Whatever the reasons, it’s clear that every step he takes is in his own interest. He wants to survive and earn the best for himself. And that’s why he did those murders. He has spies and informants all over the kingdom, which is why he shares a mirror reflection of Lord Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish from Game of Thrones. There’s more to him than us fans need to see before we can finally judge him on his actions!
One thing is obvious, Lord Larys’ actions will end up making Queen Alicent believe that blood and death can help her win whatever she wants. And that’s how we’ll become ruthless like Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones.
