Marvel’s Frontiers expansion now places them in the supernatural horror genre with night werewolf where the studio gets carte blanche to explore the sensory-charged era of Dracula and Frankenstein. Although a very saturated but successful trope, Marvel breaks away from Hollywood’s obsession with scream inducers by offering a classic homage to the shock and contrast of light and sound in horror movies. 1940s B&W.

night werewolf Receives amazing pre-launch praise
Marked as a Halloween special, the horror-thriller series is set to be Marvel Studios’ next project to fully transition into exploration mode, allowing composer Michael Giacchino to try his hand at directing. And I dare say, he did an amazing job as far as the trailer allows for speculation. The Disney+ special will feature Gael García Bernal as Jack Russell, the MCU character featured via moon knightand Laura Donnelly as Elsa Bloodstone who is Jack’s counterpart, i.e. Vampire by Night.

While it’s interesting to see how MCU delivers the transition to the supernatural with night werewolfthis isn’t the first time we’ve seen this trope present in the mainstream MCU, the most recent being Oscar Isaac’s. Moon Knight. The groundbreaking, boundary-pushing Phase 4 Disney+ series had introduced many themes into the fray, and while Egyptian gods were the show’s main attraction, Harrow’s monsters were another. The new special takes the trope one step further by fully engaging with the history of vampires and werewolves.
night werewolf Promises more monsters in the MCU
The Marvel Universe is no stranger to the most culturally recognized monsters lurking in the shadows. Vampires are a particularly beloved group in the superhero franchise, with Marvel exploring the character of Blade nearly a decade before they began laying the groundwork for the now canonized cinematic universe. The Wesley Snipes movie was capped off with a trilogy and is now being considered for an acclaimed reboot starring Mahershala Ali as the lead. Morbius was also another supernatural-focused project. night werewolf‘s producer, Brian Gay claims,
“I think one of the coolest things about the special is that it just blows the corner off monsters in the MCU, doesn’t it? So it’s not just the monsters that are part of Werewolf by Night, but the ones that were hanging on the wall, there’s also some of that artwork. All of this suggests that for centuries there have been monsters in the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that they have been hunted down, hunted, or kept at bay by those hunters. And I think, well, we don’t know exactly where they will appear next, the idea is that with this wide range of different species and types, they will appear again. You’re going to see these guys in different ways, of course.

While this is all very exciting news, it’s also important to acknowledge the creator behind it all – Michael Giacchino. The experienced composer, known for his work on The Batman and other musical compositions for Ratatouille, Zootopiaand jurassic world, is making his directorial debut at Marvel. If his horror show is successful, it will pave the way for the MCU’s supernatural element to come to the surface to play.
