After seven years, The daily show host Trevor Noah announced he was leaving for good. Noah joined the satirical TV show in 2014 as a consultant and took over as host in 2015 after Jon Stewart left.
Noah announced his departure in front of a shocked audience:I found myself thinking throughout time, about everything we’ve been through – the Trump presidency, the pandemic, just the trip… and realized that after the seven years, my time is up..” (via Connecticut Audience)
During Trevor Noah’s tenure, he had many great and not-so-great moments that sparked a lot of controversy online and garnered backlash because of his insensitive jokes.

Sexist jokes
Noah’s Twitter account is not spared his tactless humor. Most of his controversial tweets contain sexist jokes. Once he tweeted: “Messi gets the ball and real players try to trick him but Messi doesn’t fall easily just like Jewish girls.” On another occasion, he also said: “Originally, when the men proposed, they got on their knees, so if the woman said no, they were in the perfect uppercut position..” What a humorous way to describe fragile masculinity.
Aboriginal Australians
Not only did Noah make sexist jokes towards women, but he was also very specific when he targeted Indigenous women. On a stand-up show in 2013, he once said, “All women of all races can be beautiful. And I know some of you are sitting there thinking, “Oh Trevor…I’ve never seen a handsome Aborigine. But do you know what you’re saying? You say, ‘Again.’ Because you haven’t seen them all, have you? Also it’s not always about looks, maybe aboriginal women do some special things, maybe they just like to jump on you.” Not only did this show disrespect towards women, but also blasphemy towards indigenous culture.

The India-Pakistan border
It is not appropriate to make jokes about countries in conflict, especially when it has already caused so much bloodshed and trauma to millions of people. The conflict between India and Pakistan is one of the most critical events in history. Noah made a joke about it on the show and said if these countries go into all out war it will be the most entertaining of all. He said this in an Indian accent. This caused outrage among viewers and he was forced to issue a public apology.
Antisemitic messages
At the height of Trevor Noah’s popularity, people took to social media to find out how dirty someone was, and the host was not exempt. Apparently, Noah posted a very offensive tweet that put him under fire. He said, “I almost hit a Jewish child crossing the road. He didn’t look before crossing, but I still would have felt so bad in my German car!”
Murder Jokes
One of Trevor Noah’s most awkward jokes happened after news broke of Oscar Pistorius, a Paralympic sprinter who shot and killed his girlfriend. The host made a tweet that goes, “And the Oscar goes to – prison.” Although not as explicit as the other jokes, the issue should not be taken lightly.
