Warner Bros. Discovery is still struggling to find a producer who would take on the helm of DC Films similar to Kevin Feige at Marvel Studios.
2022 has been an interesting year for Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Films, to say the least. The release of Matt Reeves The Batman has certainly gotten plenty of positive buzz, with the film to critical and audience acclaim, ensuring that Robert Pattinson’s film will lead into its own shared universe, including spin-off shows starring The Penguin and of course, a sequel. As for the DC Extended Universe, the first series set in the DCEU Peacemaker debuted on HBO Max to resounding success, receiving a Season 2. Additionally, DC has its long-awaited black adam origin film starring Dwayne Johnson, which is set to hit theaters later this month. With what seemed like a positive year for the brand, you’d think things were looking up, right?
Well, Warner Bros. Discovery has come under a lot of scrutiny lately, especially after the cancellation of DC Films. bat girl for tax deduction purposes. During their recent earnings call, CEO David Zaslav reiterated that there is a 10-year plan for the franchise and is looking to follow the model of Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios. Unfortunately, that search for a Feige-esque frontman is still a struggle, especially after talks with producer Dan Lin broke down. According to The Wrap, the shelving of bat girl proved to be a huge concern for Lin, and a producer who worked at Warner Bros. Discovery was quoted with this sentiment:
“Why would Dan Lin want to take the job? DC is a huge priority for Zaslav, but who wants to jump on board and lead a film division that has already canceled a movie that was set to go. What about having a micromanaging CEO? »
Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, has become a household name thanks to his leadership of the franchise that began with Iron Man in 2008 and has since moved on to four (and counting) phases of movies and TV series set in the canon of a shared universe. Obviously, DC Films and other franchises tried to follow the shared universe plan that was made popular and successful at Marvel, but the home of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, among others, struggled. despite some real victories to his credit. With three different regime changes in just five years, including Greg Silverman, Geoff Johns & Jon Berg, and Walter Hamada in that order, DC Films has often been associated with inconsistencies in content production.
It doesn’t help that playing the role of DC Films equivalent to Kevin Feige involves a very small number of candidates, and with Dan Lin no longer in talks, despite having expressed enthusiasm for DC Comics and his characters in the past, the search continues to be a struggle. Plus, when you factor in some of the tricky situations like the controversial star of the flash Ezra Miller and their legal troubles as well as a very vocal fanbase, which makes the job itself a particularly difficult prospect. A Hollywood producer told The Wrap the following regarding the research:
“It’s a very select group of people who can effectively lead and get DC movies back on track while managing the creative, business, and – let’s be frank – political minefields that come with that work.”
Hoping that Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Films manage to find their Kevin Feige. After all, given the frustrating nature of the past two months since the cancellation of bat girl, good news and positive developments are highly desired by fans. In the meantime, all eyes are on Black Adam.
