Is She The Mole? Theories

Joi the mole in Netflix: is she the mole? Theories

The Mole, a reality competition series on Netflix, more than lives up to the notoriety surrounding its original ABC production as a mixture of justified lies, deception and paranoia. Despite one of the 12 contestants being a ruthless saboteur, they all seek to increase the sum of money in the ultimate prize pool, which is the whole objective of the game. Since the first five episodes of this revamped spectacular are now aired, let’s take a look at whether or not Joi, who is definitely a suspect, might just be the traitor.

Is Joi Schweitzer the mole?

If we’re being completely honest, Joi unwittingly prepared for the attack the moment she entered the game due to her poise and confidence. She also clarified that it would be impossible to discern when she was bluffing or double-bluffing while taking a high-risk leading position that didn’t pay off. These actions did not help his cause. Indeed, despite having a card in hand and being a commercial airline pilot by trade, she was unable to lead her small team to the right place for the success of their very first mission.

Joi definitely lacked a convincing argument for this, and his behavior during the escape from Brisbane to Boggo Road Gaol during the second challenge also left more questions than answers. Had she really missed the key that was right outside Kesi’s door? Did she make every effort to look around her own cell for clues? Did she try to escape as soon as she could in the last seconds? Everything is open, but there was clearly a suspicion about her, which was only momentarily put aside during Mission #3 when she seemed to care more about the money than anything else.

Things started to shift again when Joi decided to join the Great Barrier Reef Treasure Search Dive Team rather than the Flying Team, which was by far her greatest strength. As a result, she seemed to be performing well in the water, but the sensation didn’t last long as the challenge was unsuccessful, and she immediately withdrew $25,000 from the total prize pool of $28,500. Joi nonchalantly said that the money could be recovered before making this extravagant bet to ensure she received the elimination exemption because she felt completely unprepared for this.

It’s important to note that Joi has never been a member of a team that contributed significantly to the pot, and that was true for the fifth and sixth challenges. The latter, which required navigation skills, may have been her moment to prove herself, but she (along with Jacob Hacker) once again failed in every way. She also admitted that she would do anything, including stop the band from adding another $15,000 to their depleted pot, to get another reprieve from elimination.

Therefore, either Joi is a fantastic performer or the game really cost him dearly given how his confidence went from very high to low and his blatant disrespect for the prize money. And we, for our part, believe that the answer is “yes”. This is especially true considering that she not only showed zero fear during the missions, but also quickly managed to bluff her way to the potential $15,000/exemption. In other words, Joi is probably the mole because of her relentless focus at every turn.

Competitors

Contestants often meet for the first time before their first challenge and usually at the start of filming. To store their belongings, they are given black duffel bags emblazoned with their names and the show’s fingerprint emblem. Each contestant also receives a particular newspaper with a number; this is the only way they are allowed to record details and feelings towards other candidates.

Some candidates form “coalitions” with each other in order to ostensibly share theories and observations about the other candidates. Some contestants try to persuade the other contestants that they are the mole in hopes that the trick will trick the other contestants into being wrong and failing the quiz, eliminating them from the competition.

Tasks

Each mission (called “tests” in Season 1 and “games” in Seasons 2-4) often offers a financial reward that goes into the collective pot for varying degrees of completion. Failing a mission will occasionally result in a financial penalty. Throughout the missions, the candidates must overcome various physical and/or mental obstacles. Although the majority of assignments are straightforward and all candidates are given a detailed description of the requirements and risks, sometimes certain details of a task are withheld, making it more difficult. In some circumstances, it is possible that only a select group of candidates will be fully informed of the specifics of the challenge and will be required to work towards a different goal than the others. Rarely is a single candidate, or none of them, aware of a hidden task.

While some missions only present a mental or physical challenge, most missions combine the two. Despite the fact that overcoming fear is a common theme in the challenges, no mission has ever called for harmful actions (such as indulging in nasty substances as was done on Fear Factor) or overtly dangerous actions. The performance of “extreme” activities such as bungee jumping, abseiling or tightrope walking was necessary in some missions, although they were all carried out under the supervision of attentive experts and with the appropriate harnesses. Even some of them might be embarrassing for attendees but entertaining for viewers (like being forced to sit for a nude portrait or wearing an embarrassing outfit). Some assignments require candidates to interact with local people and ask for help, which often requires them to overcome language barriers.

While some missions only award money to the team if each team member completes their goal, others award money to each participant who completes their task independently of other contestants. It is usually necessary for the team to divide into groups based on specific traits (such as “leaders” and “followers”, for example), before learning what the task is.

The creators could secretly set up “morality tests”, where players could receive a surprise call from a local asking for help (e.g. changing a tire for a stranded motorist). The candidates then learned whether they had succeeded or failed in the mission depending on whether they had helped the person in need.

Penalties

Along with the challenges, a player who breaks the rules of the game, for example leaving the house after curfew or talking about a forbidden topic, can be punished by having money taken from the collective pot.

Punishment can also result from failing to pass a hidden “morality test”.

Testing and Execution

Each episode ends with a multiple-choice test that asks all players – including the mole and all exempt players – 20 questions (for the first season) or 10 questions (for all subsequent seasons) about the identity of the mole. Answers to questions can take a wide variety. Others may simply be true-false or yes-no questions with two alternatives each, while some questions may have up to 15 options. The investigations are based on several findings regarding the mole, including her biographical information and any role she may have had in the mission(s) this cycle. Tabletop chats, in which players share details about their personal lives outside of the game, are another common source of quiz questions (conversations that may or may not have been streamed, or have only been partially streamed). Each quiz ends with the question “Who is the mole?” and offers the names of each survivor as potential answers. This question, however, apparently carries no more weight than any of the others.

After dinner, everyone, including the mole and anyone exempted, takes the exam alone on a computer before assembling for an “execution ceremony”. A contestant is eliminated (or, as they say on the show, “executed”) if they receive the lowest quiz score. Before being transported home and taken from the set to a waiting car, they must gather their personal belongings. In the event of a tie for the lowest score between two or more participants, the person who answered the question in the longest period would be put to death. Although the mole can never win, it is always guaranteed to play until the very end and is never eliminated. Players who manage to avoid being executed do not receive their quiz results or any other quiz-related information; they are left to judge their own performance.

Exemptions

Exemption from performance may occasionally be granted to a competitor. An exempted player receives a free ticket to the next round and is not likely to be eliminated at the execution ceremony that night, regardless of their quiz performance. In the first season, narrative twists involving exemptions were rare, but from the second to the fifth season they were almost always possible and in high demand. Byes were granted during the game and made public in front of the whole group.

Exemptions may occasionally be granted to a single participant for outstanding effort or achievement at work that day. Sometimes the group chooses the player who is left out, consciously or unconsciously. In other cases, the exception stems from a desire to voluntarily omit a work and give up money for the collective pot or an unexpected consolation prize for failing a task.

In other cases, the bye is a top-secret part of the game specific to a day that only the qualified player knows about. A player (or players) can unwittingly qualify to receive an exemption by performing a simple, innocuous action such as devouring the last piece of dessert pie or being the last person to leave the breakfast table. Also, the other participants are usually unaware of that player’s plan to get the bye.
