Next Scream 3 and 4 being significantly worse than the first two and a fairly lackluster trailer in numbers for Scream 5, fans of the classic horror franchise were shocked to find that the fifth entry was actually really good. Excessive horror.
Excessive horror.

X came out earlier this year and was a phenomenal example of drawing heavily from other classic horror films and using that inspiration to create something unique. Writer/director Ti West has clearly been influenced by genre heavyweights such as Chainsaw Massacre and psychologyhowever, he uses these influences to subvert audience expectations.

Unlike other popular films in the horror genre, Max’s overtly sexual character ends up being the ‘last girl’, who ends up killing the villain and escaping with her life and the two never-before-seen characters. having sex are the first two to be killed. Mia Goth is absolutely fantastic in the dual role of Max and Pearl and takes the film from an exploitative slasher to something deeper and more meaningful, making audiences question their own mortality and manhood.

No, being Jordan Peele’s return to form

In Scotland, this film is called Naw.

Before I get into this one, let me start with a quick disclaimer; I really liked We. I feel that if We Had it been Peele’s first horror film or had it come from another director, it would have received a much better critical reception than it did. That said, it is impossible to deny that get out was a tough act to follow and is a superior film to We in almost every way.

Thereby, Nope was arguably a breakthrough film for Peele as a horror director; has been get out just a fluke, the quality of which could never be repeated? Fortunately, this was not the case because Nope managed to scare, entertain and engage its audience in the same way as get out did. It blended classic suspense techniques seen in Jaws with Signs’ bizarre sci-fi horror creating another of the main reasons 2022 has been such a great year for horror movies.

Until the very end of Body Body Body, I wasn’t too impressed if I’m being honest. All the characters were insufferable, so I never wanted any of them to make it out alive. The movie never seemed to lean into the goofy side of horror as much as the movie’s trailer did due to clever editing.

Until the very end of the movie, which is when you realize there was never a killer among the group until they all flipped in the blink of an eye.

However, this superficial, tasteless and unstable group never even considered this and immediately jumped to the conclusion that there was someone to catch them. It made for an interesting commentary on millennials (including myself) and mostly made up for a disappointing horror movie from A24.
