NRLW salary debate, paid far less than men
Women’s pay in rugby league has been debated for a long time. They are paid much less than their male counterparts.
According to statistics published by Danielle Warby, the minimum wage for players in the NRLW league is $8,500 a year and $39,184 in Australian rules football. Ruby is by far the lowest paid sport in Australia, with football league players earning the most in the country.
But 2022 has seen changes in the pay department for female rugby league players. The women’s home state of Ampol introduced the adoption of a strict salary cap, which would increase annual salaries by 28%. The Australian Rugby League Council allowed it.
NRLW teams will move to a salary cap structure for the 2022 season, with a maximum of $350,000 per team. Additionally, clubs will be allowed to sign up to two star players globally with an additional salary cap approval.
Starting next year, the top female athlete in the game will likely earn around $60,000, with those in featured partnerships being paid more. Original payments are also expected to climb this year by $4,000 to $6,000.
