There’s some truth to the premise of “The Watcher.” A family’s chilling ordeal, which was detailed in the eponymous report written by Reeves Wiedeman for New York Magazine’s The Cut, serves as the basis for the TV drama. In fact, shortly after Derek and Maria Broaddus began the process of renovating their home at 657 Boulevard in Westfield, New Jersey, they began receiving particular letters from someone who identified only as ” The Watcher”. Although there are many discrepancies between the events portrayed in the series and those that actually took place, the core plot has not changed significantly.
After finishing painting for the day in June 2014, Derek Broaddus made the decision to check the mail from his new home before he went to bed. He was going through his mail when he came across a white card-shaped envelope containing a letter signed “The Watcher”. The letter began in a friendly manner and seemed to welcome the new family that had settled in the neighborhood; however, it quickly took a strange turn. The letter writer said their family had been watching 657 Boulevard since the 1920s, when the stranger’s grandfather started watching the show. Around 1905, the Broaddus family first built the house, which they later purchased for $1.3 million.
The letter provided details of what “The Watcher” had discovered regarding the Broaddus family’s new residence and the changes they were making to their lives there. Derek’s plan to hire contractors to renovate the house was seen by the stranger as a “bad move” and was condemned by the stranger. You don’t want to upset the people at 657 Boulevard, do you? The new owners were reassured in the letter that the house would be content with juvenile blood and that the writer was aware of the family’s three children. After law enforcement police arrived at the scene, they asked Derek whether or not he had any adversaries. Following this, Derek returned to his family back home and then wrote a letter to the former owners, John and Andrea Woods. After living in the house for 23 years, the Woods family said they never felt like they were being watched by anyone. They added that they believed no one else lived in the house. During their last days at home, the couple admitted they had, in fact, received a particular letter from someone who only identified themselves as ‘The Watcher’, but gave it little thought. at the time.
After another fortnight, the 657 Boulevard mailbox received another letter addressed to “Mr. and Mrs. Braddus. The author said they already knew the children’s names, which were the same ones Maria had called out the previous days. The writer claimed to have learned more about the house and its new tenants and shared that they already knew the children’s names. Reportedly, the stranger said the house was eagerly waiting for the family to move in, and the writer added that they knew one of the children liked to paint.
Predictably, the family became terrified of what to do and eventually decided to stop bringing their children. This led “The Watcher” to send a second letter, in which they inquired about the family’s whereabouts and why they seemed to miss the house so much. Prior to this tragedy, the town of Westfield in New Jersey was widely considered one of the safest communities in the state. This fact is important to keep in mind. Nevertheless, “The Watcher” quickly destroyed that reputation. Michael Langford, whose home provided a convenient vantage point for investigating the crime scene, was one of the first people interviewed by police in the investigation.
Michael had been brought in for questioning by the authorities shortly after the first letter, but the continued arrival of the letters, along with a failed ruse by the Broaddus family, apparently cleared him of any suspicion. In the months that followed, the Broaddus suspected many of their neighbors and were very worried about the events that had unfolded. They went so far as to consider taking legal action against the previous owner of the building because they had not been informed of the mystery letter. Although no one was arrested in connection with the incident, the Broaddus family was able to sell the home for $400,000 less than what they paid when they originally purchased it.
Taking everything into consideration, we would like to reaffirm that the events depicted in “The Watcher” on Netflix are heavily influenced by the true story of the Broaddus family. On the other hand, the writers changed some significant aspects of the story and took some liberties with their creative process. In addition to only giving Dean and Nora Brannock two children instead of the original three, the series also renamed the main couple, changing their names to Dean and Nora Brannock. Interestingly, the story was also adapted by Lifetime for production on the same film, despite the fact that the Broaddus were unhappy with the decision.
