Youth and early career
Patrick grew up in Los Angeles, the second son of four children of John Wayne and his first wife Josephine Alicia Saenz. His mother was the daughter of the United States Consul General in Panama. From an early age, he aspired to follow in his father’s footsteps, being one of the most successful actors of his time. He made his first collaboration with his father in “Rio Grande” at the age of 11, a western film for which his father became known, is part of director John Ford’s cavalry trilogy.
A few years later, he appeared in “The Quiet Man”, a romantic comedy film starring his father, Maureen O’Hara and Ward Bond.
The film is known for its depiction of the Irish countryside and was a big hit, winning two Oscars. Eventually, Patrick began working on other projects with the help of John Ford, who had become a family friend of the Waynes. He appeared in “The Sun Shines Bright”, then worked again with his father in “The Searchers”.
Continued acting success
In 1955, Patrick worked on the TV movie “Rookie of the Year”, which was another collaborative effort between him and his father. The film casts Patrick as a talented prospect for professional baseball, but he is the son of a former professional who was banned from Major League Baseball (MLB).

Later career
In the 1970s, Patrick became a star in his own right, often appearing in science fiction films that established him as a mainstay in the genre. He also had other projects, notably in “Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger”, before working on “The People That Time Forgot”, based on the novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs. In 1979, he played the love interest of the character of Shirley Jones in the series “Shirley”, before embarking on animation.

Private life
Patrick married Peggy Hunt in 1965 after a few years of dating, and they dated for 13 years before divorcing. He remained single until 1999 when he married Misha Anderson. He has four children through his marriages. He is very active in supporting various cancer treatment efforts and is President of the John Wayne Cancer Foundation. Indeed, his father suffered from stomach cancer and died of the disease at the peak of Patrick’s career. Prior to his death, his father was active in the search for possible cures for cancer.
