On November 25, 2017, Chip Kelly was named UCLA’s 17th head football coach. Kelly has coached professionally and at the college level for over 30 years, most recently in 2016 as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers before moving to Westwood.
After four seasons as head coach at the University of Oregon (2009-12), where he had a 46-7 record, he also served as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles (2013-15) . He was the architect of some of the game’s most successful offenses at every location.
The 2021 season saw the Bruins win eight games, the most wins for the team since 2015; they also finished tied for second in the Pac-12 South with a 6-3 conference record, and they earned a berth in the San Diego Credit Union Holiday Bowl. At 36.5 points per game, UCLA led the Pac-12 and finished 12th nationally in scoring.
The Bruins’ running assault ranked 14th in the NCAA, averaging 215.1 yards per game. It was the first time since the 1987-86 and 1985-87 seasons that the Bruins had averaged more than 200 yards per game rushing.
On the other side of the ball, UCLA led the Pac-12 in sacks while the run defense was second in the conference and 23rd nationally with 124.2 yards per game. After catching the Pac-12’s top ten touchdown passes, Kyle Philips has become one of UCLA’s top 5 receivers in career receptions.
