2021 turned out to be a good year for Marvel, simultaneously delivering a disappointing ensemble film through Eternals while breaking box office records left and right via No return home. Even then, what is the Eternals offered to its audience was an ethereal story about gods and celestials that exist beyond the parameters of what we know. It wasn’t a major contribution to the MCU’s narrative, other than perhaps introducing the Black Knight, a character that could have major implications for the future of the MCU.

As the film now reaches its one-year anniversary, fans look back on the accomplishments and relive the potential of a visionary project that had some of the best VFX work from the Marvel Studios team after-End of Game.
Eternals Brings back mixed emotions for Marvel fans
On the one hand, the 25th live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe film delivered a turbulent tale, filled with some of Hollywood’s most wonderful stars coming together to tell an elaborate tale of gods and morality, and the greater good. The potential possibilities of what could or should have been were quickly overwhelmed by a poorly executed script. Ultimately, the film felt jerky with just enough action and erratically located emotions thrown into the mix to cook up a somewhat linear narrative.

The disappointment then skyrockets when Richard Madden’s villainous turn becomes a predictable twist rather than a cathartic outburst that drives the story to its climactic conclusion. Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek deliver arcs with so much more to say that they need their own spinoff. But beyond the passing ambition that the project has sometimes missed, Eternals was ultimately just another Marvel movie with a solid cast and a plot about heroes rising up to protect Earth at all costs, encountering a roadblock, and coming together to defeat the threat of the end of the world.
Fans recognize the Oscar-worthy visual effects of Eternals
Despite the overflowing negativity thrown at the MCU film, the faction of the fandom that still appreciates Eternals for its wonderfully executed visually dynamic frames has remorse for the lost Oscar nomination. Admittedly, the story did not live up to the greatness of its predecessors – Infinity War and End of Game – it was still a much better plot in its standalone narrative, focusing solely on celestial evolution rather than bringing humans, technology, superheroes, and aliens into the mix.
To mark his one-year anniversary, fans on Twitter took heed to his VFX accomplishments and insisted he deserved at least an Oscar nomination on that front.

Despite the 2 hour and 37 minute runtime, the film’s narrative seeks to establish a narrative that spans millennia and brings each of its individual characters and their formidable personalities to the fore, even as the story continues to s press chaos. The audience is inherently presented with innocence, corruption, tragedy, and inevitable doom, and in the understated grand scheme of things, Eternals has the potential to be an unsung classic in its time.
