English is available now on Prime Video, and you won’t want to miss this epic and jaw-dropping western miniseries. Created by Hugo Blick (The honorable woman) aD with Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns, A Quiet Place) and Chaske Spencer (Wild Indian, woman walks ahead), English follows the incredible journey of Cornelia Locke (Emily Blunt), an English noblewoman who has traveled to America and seeks revenge on the man responsible for the death of her child. She meets Eli Whipp (Chaske Spencer), a former Pawny cavalry scout, who wants to finally claim his land and settle down.
English takes the western genre to a whole new level. The show doesn’t necessarily have as much action or as many fight scenes as other westerns, and the strength of the story is mostly in its writing and the screen presence of this amazing cast.
The beauty of the photography and shots chosen by Blick echoes the poetry of the dialogues and the different narrative arcs surrounding the two main characters.
Chaske Spencer speaks English
We spoke with Chaske Spencer, whose strength, nobility as Eli Whipp, is one of the many reasons this show must not go unnoticed this upcoming awards season. You can watch the full interview below:
For Chaske Spencer, Hugo Blick’s writing is what makes English stand out from other western series. He stated :
“I think it’s a bit different from most westerns right now. For me, it’s kind of a tribute. I think sometimes it can be like a poem, it’s a beautiful movie.
As the series takes place in the Wild West, English was filmed in Spain, and for Spencer, the beauty of the landscapes is one of his fondest memories:
“The most striking memory remains the first day of filming. It was with Toby Jones, the shooting scene. I love the people who chose the location. It was filmed in Spain, but it felt like New Mexico, like we were filming just outside of Santa Fe. It was really beautiful and everything fell into place before we embarked on this great epic adventure from the filming of The English.
