The director of Knives out seems to be a big fan of shrewd, fictional detective JB Fletcher, and in more ways than one.
Rian Johnson, an American filmmaker known for making mystery/crime/thriller films, recently met Vulture in what appears to be a rather amusing interview, in which she was asked to play the infamous game of fuck, marry and kill, but with “famous fictional detectives.” And The Bloom Brothers director certainly had some interesting responses.
With the neo-noir mystery, Brickmarking his directorial debut in 2004 and having directed the popular detective and detective film Knives out with his sequel, Rian Johnson clearly has a penchant for these genres. But can you guess who his favorite fictional detectives and investigators might be? Here’s a hint for one of his answers, it has something to do with one of the most famous detectives who is bound to be known to everyone and who was the fictional creation of a certain British author. Rian Johnson talks about his favorite fictional detectives
Let’s go over how the “f*ck, get married, kill” game works, shall we? It’s quite simple and extremely fun in which the playing individual has to assign three different names to the given titles, indicating who he would sleep with, who he would kill, and which of them he would marry. And Rian Johnson’s answers are definitely funny.
“Oh my God, it’s hard” Johnson laughed when asked to play the game. “It’s not going to be good, it’s bad” he joked before revealing that the person he would marry would be the amateur detective named Mrs. Maple, a character from Agatha Christie’s detective novels who resides in a picturesque village of St. Mary Mead.

“I suppose I would marry Mrs. Marple,” treplied the award-winning filmmaker. “Because it seems…it seems like it would be a great country life, just living with Mrs. Maple, I think.” But he seemed a bit confused between her and the protagonist of The Murder She WroteJessica Fletcher before quickly coming to the conclusion of sleeping with Fletcher instead.
“Maybe I should fuck Jessica Fletcher. I feel like she’s secretly weird and I think it could be really, you know…” Johnson stopped short of claiming he might even sleep with Arthur Conan Doyle’s character, Sherlock Holmes.
When asked to clarify which Sherlock Holmes was really talking about, the director of Looper replied that he was “I think of the books.” Well, now we know Johnson has a thing for Fletcher and Holmes.
Knives out director urges people to read more works by John Dickson Carr
The last answer left was which famous detective Johnson would kill, but the poor guy was really struggling with that one before he finally came up with an answer.
“So I don’t know if you know John Dickson Carr,” the Star Wars: The Last Jedi said the director. And when he discovered that the public was effectively unaware of the existence of the American author, he took the opportunity to introduce him to people, admitting that he was not even sure that he “I really wanted to kill this person” or not. “But it’s a great opportunity to kick off the reading of more John Dickson Carr,” he observed.

Johnson claimed he would kill Gideon Fell, one of Dickson Carr’s characters who happens to be Johnson’s current favorite.
“He’s like this big, huge, massive man walking on two canes, and he’s kind of a total asshole, and I’m just hilarious, very funny,” Johnson explained. “So, uh, of course I’ll kill him, whatever.”
Killing off a character that’s his favorite really feels like something an enigmatic but helpless detective would do. Forever bound by his demons and so on.
