Sony Pictures has reportedly been under pressure from Marvel to pull Tom Holland’s planned cameo as Peter Parker/Spider-Man from the Venom movie. Sony finally got the blockbuster it was looking for with the release of Venom last year. Despite poor reviews, Venom became a financial success and inspired a sequel. Ever since Venom was greenlit, fans have been curious about the film’s relationship to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony’s Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal seemed to have opposing views, which led to some consternation.
The release of Venom in October 2018 let audiences see that it was a standalone effort unrelated to the main Marvel Cinematic Universe continuity. But months before Venom’s premiere, there were rumors that Holland had shot a planned cameo as Peter Parker. Sure, wonder may have had some say in why Spider-Man wasn’t included in the final cut.
The truth revealed
From what we hear, Sony couldn’t include an appearance of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in the Venom-verse because Marvel Studios cut it off. The Marvel Cinematic Universe creative team has been pretty methodical in building out its superpowered universe, and no hero has needed more wrangling from the upper echelons of the studio than Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.
Since Sony Pictures still owns the big screen rights to Spidey and is constantly releasing new films set in its own Sony Spider-Man universe, Marvel Studios had to be careful in order to use the header in its own story while maintaining a good relationship with SSMU producers.
Heavy spoilers on YouTube claims that Marvel Studios has banned Sony Pictures from including Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in a planned cameo in Venom (2018). Here is what they said:
“Tom Holland was supposed to be in [Venom]. Marvel Studios unplugged it and said, “No way.”
Fans have seen the MCU and other Marvel Studios brands bond in modest ways through Marvel Studios’ new deal with Sony. One of the biggest mysteries surrounding the release of Venom in 2018 was whether or not it would affect Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.
Fans would have gone crazy if they knew this was when the SSMU was officially tied to Marvel Studios’ MCU. Since then, members of the SSMU have made short appearances in the MCU, and vice versa, as evidenced by this year’s Morbius showing MCU characters on Sony’s side.
