Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is now playing in theaters, dominating the global box office. Marvel Studios’ sequel is set after the events of Avengers: Endgame and sees the nation of Wakanda deal with the loss of T’Challa and the threat of the Talocans, led by Namor. With the film available in most markets, CinemaScore revealed its viewership rating to the public.
The first one Black Panther the film received a A+ CinemaScore in an audience exit poll in February 2018. The Marvel Studios feature also earned a score of 96% on popular review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes while its sequel wakanda forever is currently sitting at 84%, based on 324 reviews from Tomato-approved critics.
In comparison to the rest of Marvel’s CinemaScore Phase 4 scorecard, Black Widow received a A-, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings received a A, Eternals received a B, Spider-Man: No Coming Home received a A+, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness received a B+ and Thor: Love and Thunder received a B+. When it comes to the latest era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s clear that audience reactions are a bit more mixed, especially compared to earlier phases where excitement was certainly higher before. Avengers: Endgame.
Two years after the release of Black Panther and the return of T’Challa in Avengers: Infinity War and its follow-up End of Game, Chadwick Boseman, the actor behind the fan-favorite character, has died aged 43, after a four-year battle with colon cancer. Marvel made the decision not to recast T’Challa, with his sister Shuri taking on the role of Black Panther.
In Heroic Hollywood’s review of the film, Ryden Scarnato wrote, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever resumes after the events of Avengers: Endgame, with T’Challa’s death becoming permanent due to Boseman’s actual passing and the story that now follows the world of Wakanda dealing with that grief. Although the film is an ensemble, it ultimately rests on the shoulders of Letitia Wright’s Shuri and Angela Bassett’s Queen Ramonda.
“When it comes to performances, everyone here is at the top of their game, and you can’t help but think that’s because of the movie’s intertwining with real life. With Wright and Bassett serving of focal points, the two are the strongest of the bunch, with incredibly personal moments that are some of the most heartfelt we’ve ever seen in the MCU.Shuri’s larger role in the film, in particular, also works for those who might have reservations.
