The CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery David Zaslav spoke about the work of James Gunn and Peter Safran on DC Universe.
During a wide-ranging discussion at RBC’s global TIMT conference in New York, Warner Bros. chief discovery officer David Zaslav revealed that James Gunn and Peter Safran are close to completing a sheet road map for the future of the DC Universe. Gunn and Safran officially began working in WBD’s new DC division on November 1.
“I think over the next few years you’re going to see a lot of growth and opportunity around DC, there won’t be four Batmans,” Zaslav teased. “And so part of our strategy is to kick the hell out of DC, which is what James and Peter are going to do. I think they delighted the fans. I think they will delight you for a while.
The latest DC Universe movie, black adam, is currently playing in theaters and has so far grossed over $350 million at the worldwide box office. Fans likely won’t see anything of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU plans until 2024 at the earliest. The next four DCU movies — Shazam! Fury of the gods, the flash, blue beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom — were overseen by DC’s former management, led by producer Walter Hamada.
Last month, James Gunn and Peter Safran signed a four-year contract to lead DC Studios. The division is now in charge of DC’s film, television and animation efforts at Warner Bros. Discovery, bringing together the company’s comic-related assets under one roof.
James Gunn is expected to focus on the creative direction of the DC Universe while Peter Safran will handle business and production. They will report directly to the head of Warner Bros. Discovery, David Zaslav, and will collaborate with co-directors from Warner Bros. Film Group, Michael DeLuca and Pam Abdy.
