Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) recently completed its Phase 4 with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Since its release, the film has garnered immense love and respect from fans around the world. The movie had too much weight on its shoulders and it turned out to be a winner, indeed. In the film’s mid-credit scene, we’re finally introduced to T’Challa and Nakia’s secret son. But who is he? Let’s find out. Huge spoilers ahead for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever!
T’Challa’s son in Marvel Comics
In the Marvel comics, T’Challa’s son is called – Azari, not Toussaint. Azari first appeared in Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow (2008), an animated film set in an apocalyptic future where the Avengers have been killed by Ultron, leaving behind their children – one of them being Azari. Azari is the son of Black Panther (aka T’Challa) and Storm (aka Ororo Monroe). The character was created by Brian Michael Bendis and John Romita Jr. Mentored by an aging Tony Stark, Azari and his super-powered friends teamed up to stop Ultron. Azari was later incorporated into Marvel Comics continuity in the 2010s avengers #1.
In the comics, Azari is a mutant and has the powers and abilities he inherited from both his parents. He possesses enhanced speed, agility, strength, stamina, healing, and senses. Azari also has the power of electrokinesis and can thus create force fields and project blasts of electricity in the form of a panther. He is intelligent and adept in all forms of armed and unarmed combat.
T’Challa’s son in the MCU
In Wakanda Forever’s mid-credit scene, Shuri (Letitia Wright) goes to a beach in Haiti, behind Nakia’s (Lupita Nyong’o) house. There, she burns the ceremonial dress she wore to T’Challa’s funeral as she finds closure to his passing. At this time, she is approached by Nakia and a boy, who turns out to be T’Challa and Nakia’s son. The boy is introduced by his Haitian name – Toussaint. However, he later reveals his Wakandan name: T’Challa, Prince of Wakanda.
“My name is Prince T’Challa, son of King T’Challa,” he said.
Toussaint/T’Challa is played by a young actor Divine Love Konadu-Sun. Considering Toussaint was born around the time T’Challa was blipped, he would be around six years old during the film. It’s also very unlikely that we’ll see it again as Wakanda’s story will likely be told (probably in the Wakanda Disney+ show or black panther 3) after a large time jump.
The likely future
As clarified, T’Challa never had a son named Toussaint in the original comic. The character is a total manifestation of the MCU world and does not exist in the comics. Therefore, it’s unclear what route the MCU might take for the character in future projects. However, one thing is certain: the boy is too young to become king. But, given how excited he is about his father being “King T’Challa,” he could theoretically be willing to become king at some point. However, it is also revealed at the end of the film that Shuri leaves the throne to M’Baku (Winston Duke).
If Shuri decides never to reclaim the throne and M’Baku bears her own children in the future, T’Challa’s son could pose a threat to their legacy. However, given M’Baku’s respect and loyalty to T’Challa and his family, he could gladly pass the throne to T’Challa’s young son. It remains to be seen whether this is going well with his children. Additionally, it’s unclear if Toussaint (aka young T’Challa) would take on the role of Black Panther as well. But unless he comes of age, Shuri will continue to be the current Black Panther. Also, at the end of the film, Shuri manages to create a new heart-shaped grass, which means that new Black Panthers are possible again.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is now in theaters.
