Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight is finally back with a new Epix TV series, Rogue heroes. Based on the novel by Ben Macintyre SAS: Rogue Heroesthis first season tells the almost incredible but true story of the birth of the SAS (Special Air Service) and their actions during the North African campaign during the Second World War.
The cast of Rogue Heroes includes Connor Swindells (Sex Education, Emma) as David Stirling, Jack O’Connell (Unholy, Invincible) as Paddy Mayne, Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones, Jojo Rabbit) like Jock Lewes and Sophie Boutella (Star Trek Beyond, Kingsman: The Secret Servicelisten)) as the fictional character Eve Mansour.

Today, the SAS is an elite military unit. However, they started out as what we can call a somewhat very dysfunctional family. It is fascinating to follow the story of these rogue heroes (heroes who, it is fair to say, would be in prison in times of peace.) One cannot but admire their tenacity and rebellious behavior because, without it, the many different missions they undertook would never have seen the light of day. The SAS was absolutely essential in the victory of the war by the Allies, mainly by preventing the Germans from extending the Third Reich in Africa.
Ben Macintyre is famous for bringing to light some of the less famous but pivotal stories of World War II (as he did with Ground Meat Operation, for example). Steven Knight brings his genius storytelling skills and his favorite punk/hard-rock playlist to the table and delivers an epic first season, which he admitted will hopefully be followed by three more seasons. .
Steven Knight explained what he finds fascinating about adapting untold stories into TV shows:
“I’m always drawn to stories that haven’t been told. These are usually the most compelling and interesting ones. The SAS kept the secret for a long time (…) But when I read the story of the formation of the SAS, it was so incredible, so incredible, I just said to myself: “It has to be told”. I also have a personal connection to it, my father was in the army, he fought in the North African campaign. He wasn’t in the SAS, but he was a soldier and when I was a kid I asked him how it was. He always said, “We used to play Cowboys and Indians. So I was partly trying to find out what this “Cowboys and Indians” really was.“
