James Gunn, who began his career as a screenwriter, is now a big name in the film industry. Gunn was responsible for leading the guardians of the galaxy trilogy which became a commercial success, grossing $773.3 million worldwide. The director has been brought into the DCEU to direct and write a screenplay for the film suicide squad in October 2018. His future appearances in the DC Universe were confirmed after the Saturn Prize winner was named co-CEO and co-chairman alongside Peter Safran.
After being accused of being involved with both the Marvel and DC Universe regarding the fanon enmity between them, Gunn came clean while expressing his devotion to both.

James Gunn slams fan for criticizing his choice to be part of both DC and Marvel
James Gunn, who has made notable contributions to the Marvel and DC Universes, was trolled by a fan asking him to stick with one. Gunn was never shy about speaking his mind on issues and did the same when questioned. The DC vs. Marvel rivalry is one that has spanned generations. Gunn, however, didn’t take it well when a fan questioned his love for the two.

I’ve dedicated the majority of the last 10 years of my life to the Guardians trilogy, and I’m not giving up on them or the thousands who worked on it in the 11th hour. A similar incident surfaced in October 2017 when the director talked about Zachary Levi for the lead role in Shazam!
In order to ease the tension around the rivalry, James Gunn tweeted,
“Every time I mention anything DC, no matter what, my feed becomes an endless screaming match about BvS.” “You’re never going to convince yourself – it’s just a bunch of wasted energy.”
Continuing, he slammed the fans saying:
“At least when you yell at yourself about Trump, it’s something of international significance. But it’s a 2-year-old movie that some people like and some people don’t. Why would anyone’s opinion another is so important to you? As Marvel and DC super fans, you have so much more in common with each other than with the rest of the world. So why do you spend so much yelling at you? It’s silly. Please stop it. Stop engaging in this way. But at the very least, when you do, untie me. I’ve muted a lot of you, but not all of you. Thank you.”

The director’s latest project with Marvel could be Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 release scheduled for May 5, 2023.
James Gunn’s concurrent projects with DC and Marvel
James Gunn who began his career as a filmmaker with Tromeo and Juliet (1997) has come a long way to now be named co-CEO and co-president of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran. However, his plans with DC’s fanon rival Marvel have yet to hit theaters. Gunn mentioned he’ll be handling the two simultaneously until May, after which he doesn’t appear to have any plans with Marvel.
The Suicide Squad (2021) The director was even part of a controversy after a slew of offensive tweets led to Disney cutting ties with him. Following this, he was removed from his position as director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
“No matter how much time has passed, I understand and accept the business decisions made today. Even these many years later, I take full responsibility for how I conducted myself then. Everything what i can do now, beyond offering my heartfelt and sincere regrets, is to be the best human being that i can be: to accept, to understand, to commit to equality and much more reflected on my public statements and my obligations to our public discourse. To everyone within my industry and beyond, I again offer my sincerest apologies. Love to all.” Gunn apologized for his actions.

James Gunn was later reinstated as director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Kevin Fiege seemed excited about James Gunn joining DC Studios, mentioning that he was excited to see his work in DCEU. However, the head of Marvel Studios was worried about how Gunn would take the time to handle both at the same time.
James Gunn would oversee the creative development of most film, television, and animated projects as co-CEO and co-president of DC Studios.
