One of the most anticipated movies of 2023 is Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse. Critically acclaimed, Into the Spider-Verse is still considered one of the best Spider-Man movies to date. Six different Spider-Men from across the multiverse have been introduced, and we expect to see many more in the upcoming sequel. We already know that Spiderman 2099 will play an important role. Other scheduled appearances include Spider-Punk and Ben Reilly, aka Scarlet Spider. However, will Tom Holland’s Spider-Man also make an appearance in the world of animation? Well, the producer talked about it and it looks like we have some good news.
Spider-Verse Producer Teases Tom Holland Cameo
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse producer Christopher Miller was asked if Tom Holland would reprise his role as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man in the animated follow-up. “Let’s assume… Everything is possible in the multiverse,” Miller said in response.
Miller said in a previous February 2022 interview, “The multiverse is huge and expansive.” And everything grows… Why would you assume these things aren’t tied together in a multiverse where anything is possible?
However, it has been reported that Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield are among those being considered for roles in the upcoming animated sequels. That’s usually to be expected with movies like this. It’s really intriguing because it could indicate that the group will reunite before what many fans anticipate will be another live-action Spider-Men team in 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars.
There’s a rumor that Holland was set to record the voice of Spider-Man in 2018’s Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but it was decided not to. in order to save the actor for a bigger project in the future.
Chances of Tom Holland appearing in Spider-Verse 2
Even though it’s set in a larger multiverse, it’s unknown if the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home will be addressed in Across the Spider-Verse. Nonetheless, Spider-Man 2099/Miguel O’Hara could have been aware of this pivotal incident on Earth-616, in which case Holland’s web-head would have been one of the hero’s recruitment targets.
This would make sense in light of Phil Lord’s statement that Spider-Man 2099 is the “leader of a group of fighters”, implying that he is responsible for bringing these variants together.
While a Marvel Cinematic Universe tie-in is appealing, most people would agree that there should be a compelling reason for the MCU Spider-Man to appear in an already packed animated sequel.
The MCU’s vast multiverse is already known to include Sony’s live-action Spider-Man properties. Therefore, they really don’t need to include Tom Holland’s Spider-Man to tie their Spider-Verse into the MCU. They just might have a cameo from one of the Spider-Men played by Andrew Garfield or Tobey Maguire in Across the Spider-Verse. It will also be a pleasant surprise, as it will be revealed that Sony’s Spider-Verse and the MCU’s Multiverse are identical.
