After the United Kingdom approves Molnupiravir the antiviral drug from Merck and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics, the antiviral tablets are in the news. The approval came on 4th November in the UK. It is believed that the drug can lower the risk of hospitalization in case of mild and moderate COVID 19 by at least 50 percent.

Soon after the approval of Molnupiravir, Pfizer of New York made an announcement stating the efficacy of Paxlovid in reducing hospitalization by 89%. Paxlovid is an antiviral tablet developed by Pfizer.

The astonishing figures are emerging as a ray of hope for the health experts to fight against the newly detected variant of coronavirus, Omicron. If the figures and facts are true, the scientists and medical experts believe that these antiviral drugs will change the course of pandemics and reduce hospitalization and death rate. 

It will enable economies to get the charge of the situation. The medical experts also emphasized the previous antiviral drugs and medicines which were given to the patients. The professionals asserted that the previous antiviral alternatives were expensive and were to be administered only in a hospital.

The agenda of the meeting was to analyze the potential of the rung and gauge its safety. A poll was conducted in the meeting to authorize antiviral tablets across the US. 13 to 10 committee members were in favor to authorize antiviral tablets for emergency use. 

The committee also showed its concerns and apprehensions about giving the drug to pregnant women and stated that this drug should not be prescribed during pregnancy if other alternatives exist for the treatment. 

The US FDA follows a standard protocol for authorizing and approving drugs. The panel’s recommendations and suggestions are given vital significance. The final call to authorize the Antiviral tablets Molnupiravir and Paxlovid will be made soon and the decision on the authorization of these tablets is expected in the coming weeks.
