Kayla Hodgson died July 13 at her home near the 9300 block of Northwest 57th Street. There have been no arrests in the case yet, according to Broward County deputies.

In Tamarac, where Hodgson’s body was found in his apartment on Wednesday, homicide detectives from the Broward Sheriff’s Office were seen gathering information at the Tamarac Village Apartment complex for a second straight night.

Police have apprehended a New York woman in connection with the death of 23-year-old Kayla Hodgson in Tamarac last month, authorities say. According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Sakiyna Thompson, 28, was arrested by the New York Police Department on Wednesday in Springfield Gardens, Queens.

Broward officials obtained a warrant for Thompson’s arrest on July 25. Deputies believe Thompson will be returned to Broward County after her extradition, where she will face first-degree murder charges.

On Thursday, Thompson’s mugshot was not immediately available. The Rose M. Singer Center on Rikers Island is where she is being held, according to the New York City Department of Corrections. Records show that Thompson is originally from Jamaica, despite the fact that it is unknown where she was residing at the time of the murder.

Broward County deputies later located a young woman, who was only 23, dead. She was identified by friends as event stewardess and bartender Kayla Hodgson.

A 911 call was made about a woman who was found unconscious in a second-floor apartment around 3 p.m., detectives said. Our caller says the patient has a gash on his neck, the operator said. His neck appeared to have been severed.

Hodgson was already deceased when deputies arrived at the scene. Residents of the complex found a thorough investigation underway when they returned home. Some people have expressed concern for their safety.

The circumstances of his death are still being investigated by homicide detectives. At around 10 p.m., seven hours after the body was discovered, detectives began cleaning up the crime scene.
