Ben was raised in Warsaw by Jewish parents. When he was seven, his family moved to Mogilnica, located about 40 miles from Warsaw.
His father spent a lot of time studying a sacred text. The manager of the family liquor store is his wife.
He attended conventional school during the day and religious studies in the evening.
One of the few survivors was taken from Buchenwald in the Tyrolean mountains near the Austrian border, and his name was Ben. He was liberated by American forces on May 3, 1945.

Ben Stern was born to Jewish parents in Warsaw. Ben’s father spent a lot of time reading the Bible.
In addition to running the business and co-owning a recording studio in Manhattan that produced cartoons and commercials, Ben worked as a radio engineer for WHOM in Manhattan.
Ben was sent from the Warsaw ghetto to Majdanek prison camp in July 1942.
He was given the task of washing the potatoes there. The sick prisoner was the first to be killed, but because of his swollen legs he was transferred to hospital.
Ben, however, was protected for two weeks by SS agents stationed in the kitchen and eventually made a full recovery. Later, another prisoner who had stolen vegetables was apprehended by the same SS.
