One of the few survivors was taken from Buchenwald in the Tyrolean mountains near the Austrian border, and his name was Ben. He was liberated by American forces on May 3, 1945.

He was given the task of washing the potatoes there. The sick prisoner was the first to be killed, but because of his swollen legs he was transferred to hospital.

Ben, however, was protected for two weeks by SS agents stationed in the kitchen and eventually made a full recovery. Later, another prisoner who had stolen vegetables was apprehended by the same SS.
