Who is Flame Monroe? Transgender comedian hangs out with Dave Chappelle following ‘The Closer’ backlash

Dave Chappelle reportedly met transgender comedian Flame Monroe on Thursday, Aug. 11 during the latter’s performance in Yellow Springs at Ohio’s Wirrig Pavilion. The aforementioned information was apparently confirmed to TMZ by Monroe’s rep.

The Emmy-nominated comedian also posted footage of her interactions with Chappelle on her Instagram page. Monroe is one of the few trans people who doesn’t seem offended by the comedian and actor’s take on trans jokes. Monroe said in the caption:

The caption appeared to allude to the harsh criticism Chapelle had faced after her comments about transgender people on her 2021 special, The Closer.

Flame Monroe recently posted on Instagram to express her support for Chappelle, who has already been accused by many of being transphobic.

Monroe posted additional footage from “Yellow Springs: Night 1” and left many glowing comments about their latest exchange on her Instagram story. The Chicagoan was seen hugging Dave Chappelle onstage in one of the footage from the event.

Another image showed her backstage appearing to speak with Chappelle.

Flame Monroe is well recognized for her work in Russell Simmons and Tiffany Haddish’s Def Comedy Jam specials, as well as comedy specials by other comedians. Monroe began her career in Chicago bars as an impersonator before deciding to pursue stand-up comedy and drag.

The Chicago native has worked as a writer and actor on comedy programs like BET’s Comicview. Monroe has also made numerous appearances on comedy programs such as Phat Tuesdays in 2022, National Comedy Center Lucille Ball Virtual Festival in 2020, and Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready in 2019.

Monroe describes herself as “an energetic and inspiring entertainer, rapper, comedian and actress from Chicago” on social media. The actress is also the mother of three children, whom she calls “AM Dad/PM Drag!” in the biography on his IMDb profile.

Flame Monroe’s support for Dave Chappelle’s trans jokes

In an interview with TMZ last year, Monroe defended Dave Chappelle’s ability to do comedy.

The black trans comedian went on to say she was against Netflix’s removal of Dave Chappelle’s special, The Closer. She believed at the time that stand-up comedy should not be restricted and that very little is truly “banned” for humorous effect.

Monroe also hinted that Chappelle didn’t deserve the terrible criticism he faced following his jokes about transgender and LGBTQ+ people.

Flame is currently seen on stage during Dave Chappelle’s Wirrig Pavilion performance, which she dubbed “SHEER PLEASURE”. Whether the two comics will properly team up for a comedy partnership tour or upcoming comedy specials is still up in the air.
