‘It would be creative suicide’: Mads Mikkelsen says Johnny Depp’s replacement as Fantastic Beasts’ Grindelwald is tough, hints Depp could soon reprise the role

Ever since ex-husband and wife duo Johnny Depp and Amber Heard fought each other, their careers have been turned upside down. Following the alleged abuse of Johnny Depp, the actor was removed from the fantastic beasts franchise as antagonist Gellert Grindelwald. Now, the possibility of him returning in upcoming movies is growing day by day since the trial ended.

Colin Farrel is the actor who started it all. Being a secret antagonist in the first part of the franchise fantastic beasts and where to find them (2016), he played the role of Gellert Grindelwald in the disguise of a certain Percival Graves. At the end of the movie, he was revealed to be none other than Gellert Grindelwald’s version of Johnny Depp aka Johnny Depp himself.

Johnny Depp became the main antagonist with his Gellert Grindelwald outfit in the film’s sequel Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018). The film received a lot of success partly thanks to the role of the actor. However, during the filming of the third film in the series, Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets (2022), news of Johnny Depp’s alleged abuse made headlines.

Unwilling to partner with a suspected abuser, Warner Bros. at the time decided to drop Johnny Depp from the project and cast Mads Mikkelsen to play the role of Gellert Grindelwald in order to finish the film for the time being. Along with this, Johnny Depp was also retired as the world-described notorious pirate and owner of the Black Pearl, Captain Jack Sparrow. The actor was removed from the filming of Pirates of the Caribbean 6 that the actor took badly to his heart.

While it’s fun to see the actor return to his game in the form of Gellert Grindelwald and many other films, there’s been no official confirmation or news from the entertainment giant yet.
