The Secret Wars Theory perfectly explains how Kang brings back deceased former Avengers via time travel to fight the current Avengers.

Avengers: Secret Wars is a story that had been a saga of a multiversal battle of epic proportions. Written by Jim Shooter, the comic series is a 12-issue compilation that was released between May 1984 and April 1985 and featured a crossover event unprecedented in Marvel comics history.

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe dives headlong into the multiverse and time travel, it not only becomes important to revisit the central theme of what Secret Wars involves but also crucial. This could mean some of the dead returning for an epic showdown against Kang the Conqueror, who is definitely emerging as the main antagonist of the multiversal saga.

Secret Wars and a trip down memory lane of Marvel Comics

During a renaissance in the comic book world, Jim Shooter had been tasked with the extraordinary responsibility of putting together a story that would make Marvel hip again. So Shooter proposed “a great story with all the heroes and all the villains in it” (as requested by the kids of the fandom). When the limited comic book series was published by Marvel Comics, it immediately skyrocketed to god-granted levels due to its vision and scale.

However, the mid-’80s 12-issue series only incorporated the Beyonder and its Battleworld with heroes and villains from the mainstream Marvel Universe. The 2019 recovery issue of Secret Wars was the only one who started etching history in the multiverse. With the Marvel Cinematic Universe doing the same, it’s only a matter of time before the looming threat of battle becomes a tangible reality and the heroes will need all the help they can get. And here’s where time travel and Marvel Legion of the Unliving get in the game.

How Legion of the Unliving Prepare for the return of Tony Stark

In the original comics, a misfit and dysfunctional team of villains had been created by Kang under the guidance of his future self, Immortus. They were to lead the team into battle with the Avengers in their timeline and destroy them, allowing the big bad to cease all-time control and become all-powerful. However, the plan was to use variations of deceased Avengers such as Iron Man, Black Widow and Quicksilver by removing them from the timeline moments before their death and bringing them into the future to fight their contemporaries – and thus become Legion of the Non-living.

Although the group achieves some form of success with their mission, it’s not enough to keep them under Kang’s control as they end up turning on him and helping the Avengers instead. The main goal of the whole plot is the return of beloved heroes who are now gone and Secret Wars and the multiversal saga provides a perfect opportunity for the return of RDJ’s Iron Man aka Tony Stark with Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow.

Avengers: Kang Dynasty will premiere on May 2, 2025 followed closely by Avengers: Secret Wars on November 7, 2025.
