Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say Sullivan drove to McAlpine Creek Park on Monroe Road at 1:45 p.m. Friday after telling his family of his plans. He promised to return in a few hours, but his family never heard from him again.

Off Monroe Road and Independence Boulevard in eastern Charlotte is a large park and greenway called McAlpine Creek Park. It is home to a lake, fishing pier, soccer fields, and dog park in addition to hiking and biking trails.

Matt Sullivan’s family statement reads, “He treasured his Friday afternoon walks and visited McAlpine Creek frequently. He has a reputation for venturing off the beaten track and is a man constantly seeking new experiences. Investigators say there are no indications of criminal activity and they are not looking for any suspects.

As the exact cause of death has not been established, we cannot declare that he committed suicide.

When Sullivan failed to return home Friday, the newspaper said, the park was investigated and his car was found at the trailhead. Her phone and wallet were found and both were examined.

In a document shared on social media on behalf of the family, friends and family said more than 100 volunteers and expert teams conducted an extensive search on Saturday.

Authorities say Sullivan was reported missing after failing to return home after promising his family he would do so shortly.

Sullivan reportedly had lunch at Moosehead Grill in the Montford neighborhood near Park and Woodlawn roads. According to the family, the only other event filmed by a fire near the park was Sullivan’s arrival.

He had promised to return from the hike to his family, but his body was later found. His wife must be in shock after learning this information.

His family says that on Saturday search and rescue teams cleared 12 “peculiar and unique gridded” park areas based on potential places Sullivan might have gone to.
