‘Lord Of The Rings’ Showrunner Talks Differentiating Series From Films

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power co-showrunner Patrick McKay explains how the Amazon series differs from Peter Jackson films.

Now ages ago, Amazon announced that it was developing a the Lord of the Rings series. This series, titled The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, was ultimately revealed to be about the rise of Sauron during the Second Age of Middle-earth. Despite the noticeable jet lag, comparisons to Peter Jackson films would be inevitable.

In the early 2000s, Peter Jackson co-wrote, co-produced and directed The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. The films were a huge critical and financial success, with the third film, The king’s return, earning more than $1 billion worldwide and winning 11 Oscars. The new Amazon series was made without Jackson’s involvement, but showrunners knew comparisons would be inevitable.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power co-showrunner and executive producer Patrick McKay spoke about his love for Peter Jackson films and revealed how the series would differ from those films:

“I would say we are big fans of Peter’s films. We were there for the opening night of each movie because they’re so wonderful and there’s so much that they capture so well what we love about those books. I think if we thought we were trying to compete with these or measure up, we’d run away. Like Monty Python, “Run!”

I think we really just went back to the books and found new stories, new textures, and new flavors that felt true to Tolkien that we may have never seen on screen before. It made it all a little more imaginable, like maybe there’s a way.

Here is the synopsis of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power:
