The team have announced the tragic death of former Middlesbrough midfielder David Armstrong at the age of 67.
Armstrong joined Boro in April the following year and made his debut against Blackpool. Throughout his career there, he played 431 times for the club and received three England caps.
He still holds the club record for the most consecutive league appearances with 305 between March 1973 and August 1980. He was a mainstay of Jack Charlton’s promotion-winning side that won the league title in 1973–74.
He made a total of 358 consecutive appearances for Boro during this period, scoring 77 goals, before moving to Southampton in 1981.

During the 1970s he was a member of the Middlesbrough club managed by Jack Charlton and won the Second Division title. They also remained a consistent Division One team for the majority of the decade. After spending most of his career at Middlesbrough, he was finally called up to play for England. At Ayresome Park, Armstrong was known for his incredible durability. For several years he wore the number 11 shirt consistently and following that he received a testimonial when he was only 25 years old. Between March 1972 and August 1980, he played 305 consecutive league games and 358 consecutive games overall in all competitions. This streak of play earned him the record for most consecutive appearances in Boro history.
He signed with Southampton in August 1981 and scored 15 league goals in his first year, playing under Kevin Keegan as the Saints led the table for the majority of the first three months of 1982 before falling to seventh place. In 1984 Saints finished second to Liverpool in the league and qualified for the FA Cup semi-finals. It was the second time in his career that he had come close to winning a championship title medal. Again, he finished with 15 league goals. And in the 1984-85 season, he led the league with 10 goals scored as the Saints finished in fifth place. In the 1985–86 season, he helped Saints advance to the FA Cup semi-finals and scored a total of 10 league goals. After scoring just once in 22 league games during the 1986–87 season, he was dropped from the squad and never played for them again. After the conclusion of that season, he signed with AFC Bournemouth, which was a tier below his previous club, and he stayed there for one season before calling it a footballing career. At Southampton, he finished his career with 59 league goals scored in six seasons.
He was named Southampton FC’s Player of the Season in 1983-84, and he also played for England three times between the 1980s and 1984. He retired from professional football in 1984.
