How Marvel Ended Doctor Strange’s Showdown With Nightmare

This year has been filled with marvelous blockbusters. From WandaVision to Thor Love and Thunder, Marvel has shown us a bunch of well-written shows to a bunch of bad CGI in the movies.

2022 kicked off with MCU’s first Disney Plus show, WandaVision, which turned out to be a big hit. The events of WandaVision led directly to the events of Doctor Strange Multiverse of Madness.

Wanda Maximoff aka The Scarlet Witch was the main villain of the movie. But we were challenged by Marvel, as we almost got to witness a confrontation between Doctor Strange and Nightmare in the movie.

Nightmare in ancient texts

Leaked Concept art gives us a glimpse of what Scott Derrickson’s version of the film might have looked like.

Here we can see ancient scripts describing what appears to be a prophecy. A prophecy hinting at the existence of a Demon Lord named Nightmare.

Doctor Strange and Nightmare

In another concept art, Doctor Strange can be seen near a lake. A frozen lake from the comics where his sister died. Dr. Strange in the comics frequently visits the lake in memory of his sister. The lake is the same place where the confrontation between Nightmare and Doctor Strange takes place.

Who is nightmare?

Nightmare

Nightmare, The Demon King of the Dream Dimension, is one of the most famous villains from Doctor Strange and Ghost Rider. The one who continually tried to take over the universe but was defeated by the wizards of the earth.

Nightmare first appeared in Strange Tales #110 in 1951 created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. He also appeared several times in Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man animated series as one of the archenemies of Spider-Man’s ally Iron Fist.

What could have been the relevance of the lake?

The frozen lake

The frozen lake in the comics is seen as a trauma in Stephan Strange’s life. This is where his sister Donna Strange died, when they were children.

Donna’s death was a turning point in Stephan’s life because it was then that he decided to become a surgeon. It was then that he decided to save as many lives as possible. Which ultimately led to him becoming the Sorcerer Supreme.

The death of his sister became a trauma for him that haunted him for years, as he was unable to save her. That’s when he started using his wits and expertise to save people.

In Doctor Strange in 2016, he was seen saving a person from almost dying. The same is true in the comics where he uses his skills and brings his patients back to life from near death.

Whatever the reason for Doctor Strange’s change of director, it certainly didn’t turn out to be the right one. Let’s all hope Scott Derrikson returns for a possible Doctor Strange sequel.
