Ladd is responsible for curating the playlist for his Nationwide SiriusXM Deep Tracks Freeform Radio show, turning the tracks he plays into freeform rock. He regularly opens the floor to questions and comments from the public. The majority of his musical sets are structured around a subject or narrative, such as Old West outlaws, pretty ladies, fast vehicles, or politics. He also takes requests from members of the public, and such a request can often serve as the impetus for a full act.
Every week, on Monday, Wednesday and Sunday evening, he hosts three different programs around a central subject. Jim put the blues front and center on his “MOJO MONDAY” show from 10-11 p.m. Monday. On Wednesday at midnight, he gave a performance called “Helmets” which lasted a full hour and was uninterrupted. This is a thematic compilation of music that has been perfectly mixed together, with one song flowing into the next. It also incorporates a variety of sound effects, such as voice-overs and film lines relevant to the subject. Ladd got his start in the music industry in 1969 at a small rock station in Long Beach called KNAC. After working there for a total of two years, he moved to the KLOS station in Los Angeles. In 1974 he moved to KMET, also known as “The Mighty Met”, and remained there for the majority of the next 13 years (returning to KLOS in 1984, but returning to KMET again, 2 months before they don’t change format). In 1987, Ladd made a guest appearance on Pink Floyd bassist Roger Waters’ second solo album, entitled Radio KAOS, in which he portrayed a fictional disc jockey by the name of DJ Jim who chats with the protagonist of the album, a handicapped youngster named Billy. Ladd accompanied Waters on the tour that immediately followed, and he also made an appearance in all three accompanying music videos for the album. Ladd also appeared in the 1989 film Say Anything directed by Crowe, as a DJ who worked all night…. Additionally, Ladd’s work has been featured in major films like Tequila Sunrise, Rush, She’s Out of Control, and Defendor, which stars Woody Harrelson.
Because he refused to join a playlist, as requested by the majority of radio station owners, Ladd was only able to work intermittently in the radio industry for several years. Ladd worked at KMPC-FM in the late 1980s, where he helped form the station’s mix of classic and modern rock “Full Spectrum Rock”. He was enthusiastic about the station’s renaming to KEDG “The Edge” in March 1989; however, he was fired from his position when the station abruptly dropped its rock format two months later.
Radio Waves: Life And Revolution On The FM Dial was published by St. Martin’s Press in 1991 and was a semi-autobiographical book written by Ladd. The book was based on his radio career and the rise and fall of freeform rock radio in Los Angeles, beginning with the start of freeform on the West Coast and ending with the closure of KMET in 1987. Ladd’s book was based on his experiences. However, Raechel Donahue said she demanded that Ladd use her own name and that of her late husband Tom Donahue in the book. The names of many people and radio stations Ladd contacted during this two-decade period have been changed to pseudonyms. Others who have been recognized by their “air names” include David Perry, Ace Young, Jack Snyder, Damion and the late B. Mitchel Reed and JJ Jackson. Also included in this group are other people who went by the nickname “Damon”.
During the same year, Ladd began working for KLSX. When the station abruptly changed its programming to talk radio in July 1995, Ladd and the rest of the KLSX crew were fired without any warning or explanation.
