She-Hulk is back with Marvel Episode 2 She-Hulk: Lawyer today. The episode was titled “Superhuman Law” and was directed by Kat Coiro. It starred Tatiana Maslany (as Jennifer Walters aka She-Hulk), Mark Ruffalo (as Bruce Banner aka Hulk), and Tim Roth (as Emil Blonsky aka Abomination) in prominent roles.
The episode saw the beginnings of a law firm called “GLK&H” whose head Holden Holliway (Steve Coulter) hires Jennifer Walters. But what exactly is this firm and what is its significance in Marvel comics? Let’s dive in.
The GLK&H law firm in the comic strip
The acronym GLK & H. stands for ‘Goodman, Lieber, Kurtzberg & Holliway’, named after its founders. This is a Manhattan-based law firm specializing in superhuman law. Located in Manhattan’s Timely Plaza, it first appeared in She-Hulk #1 (March 2004). They represent superhumans in various legal capacities, including cases ranging from libel to defense against personal injury. In some cases, they also depicted alien cases across the mortal plane, time, and space. Its current members in the comics include Mr. Bobo, Ditto, Gibbon, Whiz Kid, Momenta, Smedley, and Zig-Zag.
Holden Holliway, in the comics, co-founded GLK&H in 1961 after his teenage granddaughter, Sasha Martin, became the supercriminal known as left-handed. Holliway personally recruits Walters in part because of her She-Hulk powers and experience as a heroine. He hoped she could serve as a role model and mentor for Southpaw. However, knowing She-Hulk’s reputation as an immature party girl, Holliway insists that she conducts most of her GLK&H business in her more low-key human form as Jennifer Walters (as opposed to the show’s). .
GLK&B in comics
At some point in the comics, Holliway had to leave the company in search of her granddaughter. After that, Mallory Book became the full partner in the business and it became known as GLK&B, i.e. Goodman, Lieber, Kurtzberg & Book. It should be noted that Goodman’s first three senior legal associates, Lieber, Kurtzberg, and Holliway are a tribute to some of the founding members of Marvel Comics.
- Goodman refers to Martin Goodman, the first publisher of Marvel Comics.
- Lieber refers to the end Stan Leebirth name – Stanley Lieber.
- Kurtzberg refers to Jack Kirbybirth name – Jacob Kurtzberg.
Disney even recently released a new video to promote the all-new Marvel Studios series, “She-Hulk: Attorney At Law.” This video is an advertisement for GLK & H, the law firm that Jennifer Walters aka She-Hulk works for. check it out here.
GLK&H in the She-Hulk series
In the second episode of She-Hulk, Holliday tells Walters that he wants her to be the face of their new ‘Superhero Law Division’. Jennifer Walters aka She-Hulk will now be a permanent employee of the firm. She will represent superheroes and possibly supervillains in their legal cases. Perhaps she could receive some backlash from the accepted part of Emil Blonsky (Abomination), but it will be interesting to see his defense in court. She could then call Wong (played by awesome Benoit Wong) the witness at trial. This may be when she meets Matt Murdoch (played by Charlie Cox) daredevil. Although the show has been called a “legal comedy/drama”, a strong courtroom scene has yet to be featured in the series.
If fans are lucky, they might be able to find Jennifer Walters and Charlie Cox as the attorneys facing off in court. However, one thing is certain – just like the DODC (Department of Damage Control), GLK&H will also play a major role in the MCU in the future.
The first two episodes of She-Hulk: Lawyer is now streaming on Disney+.
