John Boyega shared some story details that he says would have improved the quality of the star wars Continuation Trilogy.
Almost three years after his last appearance as Finn in the star wars Sequel Trilogy, John Boyega has three films for 2022. One of these films, break, features perhaps his best performance yet, showcasing an incredible dramatic range from the 29-year-old actor.
John Boyega was naturally asked about his work on the star wars Continuation Trilogy. Boyega didn’t mince words about his experience on the franchise, which is mixed to say the least. While he certainly had positive experiences with it, he also faced racist abuse from a group of vocal fringe fans as well as a disappointing story trajectory for his character Finn, who was without doubt the second most important character of the force awakens and whose role was downgraded with The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker.
While promoting break, John Boyega was asked by Vanity Fair what he wanted the star wars Sequel Trilogy could have been explored further. He shared some hopes he had for Finn, as well as Luke Skywalker:
“To some extent, there should have been a Stormtrooper Rebellion…And then to flesh out the character of Luke a bit more. Give him more moments of redemption, which I feel was needed after VII [The Last Jedi].”
Regarding some of the legacy characters returning from the original star wars trilogy, John Boyega has revealed that he wished Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), and Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams), among others, had spent more than time with the new Sequel Trilogy characters for a stronger handover:
“I feel like star wars fans needed more time with these characters we love so much.
Both fans and detractors of star wars Sequel Trilogy often has one thing they agree on: John Boyega’s Finn was misused in the last two episodes. Based on Boyega’s comments here, it looks like he also agrees with the critics regarding the use of characters from the original trilogy. In particular, his comments regarding Luke Skywalker are quite telling given that in the sequels, the Jedi Master only interacts with Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), and he never shares scenes with Finn, Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran) among others. While Boyega isn’t interested in returning as Finn anytime soon, we hope the next set of storytellers have higher ambitions for the character. After all, his performance in Breakup teases even bigger performances to come from the actor.
