Mysterio, nephew of Rey Misterio Sr., began wrestling professionally in 1989 at the age of 14 on the independent circuit. In 1992, he signed with Asistencia Asesora y Administración (AAA). Mysterio joined World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1996 after briefly competing for Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW). The emergence of the cruiserweight wrestling divisions has been attributed to Mysterio’s work in WCW, where he also won the WCW World Tag Team Championship three times and the WCW Cruiserweight Championship five times. Early career (1989–1992)
At the age of 14, Gutiérrez made his Mexico debut on April 30, 1989. He was trained by his uncle Rey Misterio Sr. and began wrestling as a youngster in Mexico, where he developed the distinctive technique high-flying Lucha Libre. Before his uncle gave him the nickname Rey Misterio Jr., he wore ring names like “La Lagartija Verde” (The Green Lizard) and “Colibr” (Hummingbird). Mysterio won “Most Improved Wrestler” in Mexico in 1991 while competing under the name Colibr.

Cruiserweight Division (1996–1998)
On June 16, 1996, at The Great American Bash, Mysterio made his World Championship Wrestling (WCW) debut by challenging Dean Malenko for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship, which Malenko eventually won and held. He won a number one contender’s fight against longtime foe Psicosis in July at Bash at the Beach to earn another shot at the Cruiserweight belt. He defeated Malenko the next night on the July 8 edition of WCW Monday Nitro to win his first Cruiserweight Championship. Prior to losing the championship to Malenko at Halloween Havoc, he had a three-month tenure as champion during which he had title defenses against opponents such as Ultimate Dragon, Malenko, and Super Caló. Mysterio challenged Ultimate Dragon for the J-Crown Championship after winning the Cruiserweight Championship, but lost the title fight in World War III in November.
He and Prince Iaukea fought for the WCW World Television Championship in early 1997. After Lord Steven Regal attacked him, Mysterio lost the title match to Iaukea at SuperBrawl VII. At Uncensored in March, Mysterio also lost a championship rematch. Mysterio soon began a conflict with the New World Order (nWo), which ended when Konnan, a member of the nWo, defeated him in a Mexican Deathmatch at Road Wild in August. Then Mysterio got into a fight with Eddie Guerrero, his close real-life friend and heavyweight champion. He won the Cruiserweight Championship a second time at Halloween Havoc by defeating Guerrero in a Title Battle against Masque.
