Alicent and King Viserys
The second episode of House of the Dragon is out and we see King Viserys I choosing Sir Otto Hightower’s daughter Alicent Hightower as his second wife just days after his wife’s tragic death while giving birth to his child . Finding himself without an heir and the reality that his brother Daemon is not a good candidate for the Iron Throne, the King is forced to choose his only daughter, Princess Rhaenyra, as heir to the Iron Throne.
Although he nevertheless mourned the loss of his beloved wife, the king was encouraged to choose a new queen due to his young age and the fact that he had the potential to father several more children.

After the gruesome death of Aemma Arryn, the kingdom’s aristocratic households plotted to make their daughters the new queen regent in the months that followed. So, at the conclusion of the first chapter of House of the Dragon, Otto Hightower aka Hand of the King took advantage of the circumstances by sending his teenage daughter Alicent to the king’s chamber under the guise of comforting the grieving monarch.
Several women, including Rhaenys Targaryen as well as Laena, the 12-year-old daughter of Corlys Velaryon, were offered to King Viserys in the second chapter of the Amazon miniseries. But the king ultimately chose Lady Alicent Hightower, the barely older best friend of his announced heir.

Tensions loom
The marriage of King Viserys to Alicent is sure to cause tension with his new heir, as the finale of episode 2 of Dragon House. The latter had expressed her fear that Viserys had children who would challenge her right to the Iron Throne through a second marriage.
Rhaenyra confided in Alicent about her worries, but never revealed that she visited her father behind her back for months in order to marry Viserys. Rhaenyra’s girlfriend is now her stepmother, and she has children who might challenge Rhaenyra’s claim to be Lord of the Sven Realms.
By courting King Viserys, Alicent will allow House Hightower and especially the King’s Hand to develop a new partnership with the King and Westeros. If Alicent were to deliver King Viserys a male heir, the Hand of the King would likely plot to have that child succeed his father as ruler of Westeros upon his death. If that happens, Rhaenyra would probably stand with Devil as well as Corlys Velaryon, both of whom were rejected by King Viserys in their attempts to influence within the royal court.
In the first season of House of the Dragon, the coronation of Alicent as queen brings the question of the hierarchy of power closer to Rhaenyra Targaryen.
