Warner Bros Discovery CFO Defends ‘Batgirl’ Cancelation

Warner Bros Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels Defends Cancellation bat girlclaiming that the media exaggerated it.

Last month, Warner Bros. Discovery made the controversial decision to cancel the project bat girl film. When asked about it, CEO David Zaslav said that the company’s new officials just don’t believe it. It would be the first of several controversial moves the company has made throughout the month.

The CFO defends his position

Since the announcement, various cast and crew members have spoken out against Warner Bros. Discovery’s decision. However, company executives have stepped up their efforts to defend the decision. During a speech at the Bank of America Securities Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference, Chief Financial Officer Gunnar Wiedenfels defended the decision to suspend bat girlstating that the decision had been exaggerated:

“To me, you know, it’s a bit disproportionate, in terms of outward focus. The focus here, going forward, is on what content we’re spending more than ever in the history of the two legacy companies. We continue to make significant investments — [but] we will make them differently.

The CFO blamed the media for blowing up the story:

“The media like to talk about the media, I guess. I don’t think that’s unusual. We are a creative industry and one of the elements of creativity is that there is judgment and views on the potential of what a certain piece of [intellectual property] could be.”

Wiedenfels went on to defend the company’s budget cuts:

“Obviously the course corrections, making changes quickly where we disagreed with the track WarnerMedia was on, that took a lot of courage and early execution.”

The bat girl The film was to star Leslie Grace of In the Heights. Batgirl was last seen on the big screen in live-action as Alicia Silverstone as Joel Schumacher batman and robin in 1997. The film followed the Barbara Gordon iteration of the Gotham City heroine. JK Simmons was also in the film as Commissioner Gordon, Brendan Fraser as the villainous Firefly, and Michael Keaton returned to play his version of Batman.
