Guanyin mentioned by Wong in She-Hulk will strengthen Shang-Chi

We saw Shang-Chi in action during Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Without the Ten Rings, Shang-Chi was already a great martial artist and extremely skilled fighter. After all, he was raised and trained to be an assassin by his father Xu Wenwu. Eventually, his Aunt Nan made him even stronger by teaching him his mother’s style of Tai Chi. At the end of the movie, of course, Xu Wenwu passed the Ten Rings on to Shang-Chi. But what if we tell you that Shang-Chi could become even more powerful after Wong mentioned the goddess Guanyin in the recent episode of She-Hulk?

The duo of Wong and Madisynn in episode 4 of She-Hulk

In this episode, Wong approaches She-Hulk for help with a case. The case involved the dangerous misuse of the mystical arts by a former student of Kamar Taj known as Donny Blaze. He opened portals to different dimensions and transported volunteers as part of his act. Eventually, one of them, Madisynn King, ended up in Kamar Taj, prompting Wong to take action. During the cease and desist court proceeding filed by She-Hulk, Madisynn is brought in as a witness. During her deposition, she is quite drunk and her statement on the stand is an absolute mess. This forces Wong to ask Guanyin for his mercy during his trial.

While this was only meant to be a fun comment to show the comic relationship between Wong and Madisynn, it could well be much more than that. It turns out that Guanyin is a goddess closely related to another MCU superhero. We’re talking about none other than Shang-Chi.

Who is the goddess Guanyin?

Guanyin the Goddess of Mercy referenced by Wong in She-Hulk

Guanyin is the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy in real life. However, in Marvel Comics, she is part of the Xian. The Xian is a collection of gods and goddesses that belong to Ta-Lo, the mystical village explored in Shang-Chi. Ta-Lo has mainly been explored as the village to which Shang-Chi’s mother belonged. It was also where the final battle against the Soul Eaters and the Dark Keeper took place. Nonetheless, there were several aspects of Ta-Lo Village that the MCU didn’t explore. This includes the fact that the kingdom was home to several gods and goddesses.

Now, with Thor: Love and Thunder released on Disney+, I’m sure we’ve all seen the movie. It explores the Butcher God Gorr and his mission to exterminate all Gods in the Universe. So the MCU is already exploring the concept of gods in Marvel, especially the Greek gods given the appearance of Zeus and his son Hercules in the post-credits scene. It would also be the perfect way to introduce the gods of Ta-Lo.

Xian the Taoist gods

The Xian or Taoist gods, including The Guanyin are very powerful. They have the ability to practice magic, transform matter, disguise their appearance, and wield cosmic and supernatural energies. They heal at an incredibly fast rate due to their divine strength. In fact, the Xian can even revive a mortally wounded God through their collective life forces.

What does this mean for Shang-Chi?

Shang Chi

Since Ying Li, Shang-Chi’s mother was supposed to be Ta-Lo’s guardian, there is a chance that she is somehow related to the gods. This would essentially make Shang-Chi a demigod or half-god. Since Phase 4 is slowly trying to weed out the previous Avengers and build a new team of superheroes, Shang-Chi if a demigod could take Thor’s place in the Avengers. It would also make him nearly immortal by giving him a long and indestructible life force.

Additionally, with his mystically charged Ten Rings already making him immortal, there are many similarities between Shang-Chi and Thor. Wong’s reference to Guanyin is even more significant considering he’s been working alongside Shang-Chi and Katy for quite some time now. This could mean that Wong already knows his God status. Regardless, Shang-Chi will definitely become a force to be reckoned with.
