Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom – How Disappearance Could Return
Fans of The Legend of Zelda probably know Ganondorf as the series’ most famous villain, but in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (also known as BOTW 2), Demise, the most powerful villain in the series, could make a comeback. The main villain of The Legend of Zelda, Demise, first appeared as the final boss of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. He was later revealed to be Ganondorf’s father and the first main enemy of Hylia, Link, and Zelda. Demise gave up her body so that her hatred could be reborn with the hero and the reincarnation of Hylia. His hatred takes the form of Ganondorf (or Ganon) in every Zelda game he shows up in.

Even though Demise was defeated at the end of Skyward Sword, that doesn’t mean he’s gone for good. In the Zelda series, there have been many times when villains have returned. Ganondorf is probably the best known because he’s been in a lot of matches, but he’s not the only one in the series. Vaati, a wind mage, has also appeared in games like Zelda: Four Swords (which would be great to bring back for Switch) and The Minish Cap, though he seemed to have been defeated by an earlier version of Link. Nintendo has shown it’s okay to bring back enemies that have already been defeated, and Breath of the Wild 2 could be where unexpected villains return, possibly even Demise.
Even though The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild are set in Hyrule, it’s not always clear which version of Hyrule they are in. At one point, Skyward Sword was the first game in the series, but that was before Breath of the Wild was released. There are Skyward Sword Easter Eggs that can be found in Breath of the Wild, but there are also other Easter Eggs that make it difficult to use these items to determine where the game fits in the timeline. Considering Tears of the Kingdom could take place before Skyward Sword or even in a timeline where Skyward Sword never happened, it’s possible that Demise is still very much alive.

Aside from the confusing timeline, it’s also possible that Demise will come back to life during Tears of the Kingdom. In The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Zant tried to bring back Ganondorf. It’s possible that a little villain is trying to figure out a way to bring Demise back right now. When Hylia first sealed Demise, he became the prisoner, and his Skyward Sword servant Ghirahim eventually freed him.
Nintendo kept most of the information about BOTW 2 close to the vest, even after announcing the name of the game, so it’s hard to know what they have planned. If the reincarnation process is interrupted, Ganon becoming Calamity Ganon could mean that Demise will return. Fans will just have to wait until May 13, 2023, when The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will finally be released.
