James Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have said they are looking for a new 007 actor to take on the role of the legendary secret agent for at least a decade.
After Daniel Craig retired as Bond last year no time to die, MGM is now looking for a new leader to take over the spy franchise. It’s obviously a role that comes with a heavy cinematic story and the studio apparently isn’t interested in a one-off Bond.
The producers of 007 recently spoke about the commitment their new lead actor would have to make and the distance between them and a new James Bond.
Speaking to Variety, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson shared an update on their search for a new 007 and their vision for James Bond’s future.
Bond producers have revealed that it is still at the “early stage” of their search for Daniel Craig’s successor. “The thing is, it’s going to take a few years,” Broccoli said of the timeline to find the new Bond, adding “when we pick Bond, it’s a 10, 12 year commitment.”
Barbara Broccoli went on to explain how finding a new Bond means finding someone who can lead not just a movie but a total reimagining of the franchise:
“That’s why when people say, ‘Oh, who are you going to get?’ it’s not just about casting an actor for a movie. It’s about reimagining, and ‘Where do we take him? What do we want to do with the character? And then, once we have Understand that, who is the right person for this particular reimagining?… But it’s a big commitment. It’s not just about showing up for a few months of shooting.
Daniel Craig has wowed Bond fans with his more grounded take on 007 during his 15 years in the role. Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson certainly have their work cut out for them in their search for Craig’s replacement and it looks like the franchise’s newest star will have to be around for the long haul.
Here is the synopsis of Daniel Craig’s last outing as James Bond, No time to die:
Bond has left active service and is living a quiet life in Jamaica. His peace is short-lived when his old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA shows up asking for help. A mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading Bond on the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.
