The Way Of Water’ Will Be A Hit

James Cameron isn’t sure his long-awaited movie, Avatar: The Way of the Water will be a success after such a long delay.

In 2009, James Cameron’s Avatar hit theaters and made history. While some questioned the film’s narrative quality, it was a huge success and became the highest-grossing film of all time. After several releases, the film retained that title and grossed over $2.73 billion worldwide. Some, however, wondered if a sequel could make comparable numbers or if it would even be able to break even.

Since the release of the first film, James Cameron has been working on a sequel to Avatar in some way, shape or form. After dropping several storylines, the director instead opted to take the franchise in a longer direction, shooting the second film, Avatar: The Way of the Waterand Avatar 3 back to back. The fourth and fifth films were already in development, and although Cameron said he might have another director take over the franchise, production has already begun on the 4th film. However, even the director does not know if the next film will be a success.

James Cameron admits he may have waited too long

Speaking to The New York Times, James Cameron admitted he was concerned that delaying the film for so long would have a negative effect on the film. Some of them were resolved when the first trailer garnered nearly 150 million views in one day, but I still couldn’t say for sure:

“I was a little concerned that I had stretched the ties too much, in our fast-paced modern world, with the arrival of Avatar 21 12 years later. Until we dropped the trailer and we got 148 million views in 24 hours. There’s what we barely see but wonder about the principle, ie, Wow, we haven’t seen this in a long time, but I remember how cool it was back then. Does that work in our favor? I don’t know. I guess we’ll find out.

Here is James Cameron’s synopsis Avatar: The Way of the Water:

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, “Avatar: The Way of the Water” begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri and their children), the troubles that follow them, the the lengths they go to protect each other, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

Directed by James Cameron from a script he co-wrote with Josh Friedman, the sequel stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco , Jemaine Clement, Giovanni Ribisi and Kate Winslet.
