BHUBANESWAR: Based on the suspicion that business tycoon Mahimananda Mishra has amassed a lot of money through illicit means, the police are considering whether it would be legal to seize Mishra’s properties. Mishra was apprehended in Bangkok on December 25 last year for allegedly planning the murder of Mahendra Swain, a Seaways Shipping executive, on October 26. At least 13 criminal cases against Mishra have been uncovered so far by Paradeep Police in Jagatsinghpur region. On December 25 last year, Mishra was taken into custody and subsequently charged with the alleged crime.

Mishra, the owner of Orissa Stevedores Limited (OSL), is said to have assets worth over Rs 10,000 crore. His bank accounts, which include deposits totaling more than Rs 5 crore, are already frozen by us. We are investigating the situation with legal advice to see if we can seize all of his assets, including his other bank accounts. We strongly believe that he acquired most of his wealth using immoral methods. Although he was involved in several businesses, stevedoring was his main occupation. He seized numerous contracts for the forced handling of goods. “It was clear from Swain’s murder as Seaways Shipping became a huge threat to his business and his monopoly,” said a senior police official who spoke to TOI.

According to the case diary kept by the police, between August and September last year, Mishra made a number of unusual cash withdrawals from his company’s accounts totaling nearly from Rs 80 lakh. “We have a strong suspicion that he was in possession of the huge sum to materialize Swain’s murder,” the police officer said.

In a related development, the ward police station is expected to seek Mishra’s detention so that he can be questioned in relation to a complaint filed against him in February 2016. Manchewar Police had filed a complaint against Mishra, his colleague Basant Bal, and Congress politician Arindam Sarkhel, called Bapi, based on a complaint filed by Mishra’s rival businessman Pranakrushna Nayak. On February 26, 2016, Nayak alleged that the three bombed his house. The case was filed against the three of them as a result of the complaint. Both Bal and Sarkhel have been arrested in connection with the investigation into Swain’s death. Bal received medical treatment at SCB Medical Center in Cuttack while in police custody, while Sarkhel remains in court custody.
