Jazz was something that was continually on the mind of writer and filmmaker Tyler Perry when he began composing “A Jazzman’s Blues”. “Jazz was, in many ways, the background music of my life.” “Voices like those of Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Duke Ellington, and all of these fantastic and incredible artists, have always been an inspiration to me,” he said. Perry remembers as a kid he used to sneak out of the house and go to his grandfather’s juke joint to watch the patrons having fun. As a result, as the plot of the film unfolded in his head, he became aware that he was unconsciously thinking about his own life at the same time. Explaining how music has become a powerful storytelling tool, he remarked, “In times of tragedy, there was always music; and moments of wonderful events, there were always songs, laughter and joy.
Perry was looking for someone who could really portray the role of Bayou because the movie he was shooting was all about the music. In addition to having strong acting skills, the actor who took on this role had to be able to sing very well and demonstrate a high level of skill in the art form in order to be cast.
