Perry was looking for someone who could really portray the role of Bayou because the movie he was shooting was all about the music. In addition to having strong acting skills, the actor who took on this role had to be able to sing very well and demonstrate a high level of skill in the art form in order to be cast. It turns out that Joshua Boone, who already had acting experience on Broadway, was the perfect candidate to play Bayou. He performed all the songs associated with his role. The plot of the film is that of two people who fall in love but are destined to spend their lives apart. Bayou and Leanne discover a deep connection despite the turbulent period of segregation and violence in the south, which serves as the backdrop for the story.
