The MCU recently embraced its darker side with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Moon Knight. Luckily, there is a group made up of all of these vigilante characters called the Midnight Sons. There’s even an upcoming Marvel video game of the same name coming out soon. So who exactly are the Sons of Midnight and what do they do? Keep reading to find out!
Who are the Sons of Midnight?
The Midnight Sons are a group of 9 superheroes who were destined to defeat Lilith the Mother of Demons. These 9 heroes were brought together by none other than Doctor Strange. They were recruited to fight Lilith when Strange himself couldn’t. All had connections to the occult and mystical arts. These guys didn’t like each other very much and certainly didn’t consider each other teammates. However, in the face of adversity, they banded together. The heroes managed to weaken and then defeat Lilith. They also derive their name from the fact that they fought Lilith in the Land of the Midnight Sun.
They had developed a mark or sigil which was a small cross with a pointed point down. This mark has been carved into the arms of many members of the oldest version of the Spirits of Vengeance. These guys were the original version that defeated the demon Zarathos long before Doctor Strange gathered the nine.
After that, the members of the Midnight Sons went their separate ways, but were often reunited as needed. They were basically just a loose alliance of heroes. Once, Morbius called the group to help him fight off zombies from a different universe who were spreading a deadly virus. This group was brought together once again by Wong to aid Doctor Strange when the Inferno Hotel appeared in Las Vegas and transformed superheroes such as Captain Marvel, Falcon, Hawkeye, and Black Panther into Ghost Riders.
Who are the members ?
Over the many iterations of the Midnight Sons, there have been many members. The first 9 assembled by Doctor Strange consisted of John Blaze, Morbius, Louise Hastings, Victoria Montesi, Sam Buchanan, Blade, Frank Drake, Hannibal King. Each member had some sort of connection to the occult and supernatural elements of the world. Over time, other members have been added such as Night Werewolf, Moon Knight, Iron Fist, Scarlet Spider, and most notably Wong who led this ragged group of heroes as their leader.
If and when the Midnight Sons are introduced to the MCU, characters such as Ghostrider, Moon Knight, Werewolf by Night, and Wong as the leader will form the team. Morbius likely won’t join them due to the contentious rights issue between Sony and Marvel. In fact, even Agatha Harkness, who will be seen next on her Disney+ show Agatha: Coven of Chaos, could also join them as an anti-hero of sorts. Mostly due to her rich history with the witches of Salem and previous experience with the Darkhold. Kit Harington’s Black Knight could also join the others. His character was only slightly teased in the post Eternals credits scene with Blade’s voice playing in the background.
When and how will the Midnight Sons make their MCU debut?
The MCU is already featuring the various members of the Midnight Sons with Wong and Doctor Strange taking pride of place and Moon Knight having his own series. Soon we will see Blade and Werewolf by Night. In fact, the MCU refers to him as Halloween Special which shows his interest in further exploring the supernatural side of Marvel. However, it’s unlikely there will be a Midnight Sons project before MCU Phase 7. After all, San Diego Comic Con and the D23 Expo have already established most of the MCU’s timeline through Phases 5 and 6. They will build the multiversal saga and introduce Kang to bring it all together. That doesn’t leave much room for a new, completely different type of project.
