Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has always wanted to do his version of Pinocchio. His dream came true when Netflix decided to produce his lifelong passion project. Guillermo del Toro said that no character in the story had a deep personal connection to him as Pinocchio. The film is set to hit theaters and will be available on Netflix when it hits theaters. As part of its annual fan event, Tudum, Netflix has released a behind-the-scenes clip from the upcoming stop-motion movie.
Behind the scenes clearly shows the time and effort required in stop-motion. The director explains how filming a simple scene requires hours of work and how stop motion is different from animation. Fans love the behind-the-scenes clip. Many claimed that this version was much better than Disney’s Pinocchio.

Guillermo del Toro presents behind the scenes of Pinocchio
The two-minute clip takes us through the film’s setting. The time-lapse brings the characters to life as the clip shows a monkey jumping down the stairs and moving forward. It shows everything the film crew did to create each individual scene.
Guillermo del Toro explains how there is a valuable difference between stop motion as an art form and digital, for him. It explains how stop-motion movies were made in their early days and how things have changed over time.
He said, “The stop-motion in the beginning where you had the shimmer of the fur and the fabric, even the atmospheric dust on the sets. And the imperfection was kind of beautiful to watch because it told you how the thing was made .
Guillermo del Toro added that he wanted Pinocchio be an expressive and material nature of a piece of handmade animation. βBut it had the sophistication of movement that platforming research and puppet-making led us to,β he explained.
Guillermo del Toro then explains how different sized puppets have different uses in the film. He shared two puppets with a huge difference in their size. A large puppet head was used to interact with the cricket where it would be on Pinocchio’s shoulder, talking or whispering to him. Then he shared a little puppet of Pinocchiowhich was used for some specific shots.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is set in Mussolini’s Italy
One of the film’s actors, Ron Perlman, spoke about the Pinocchio adaptation and his role in the film. In his interview, the actor said that while Disney presented the story in a kid-friendly way, del Toro wouldn’t do the same.
He said the film would be set in Mussolini’s Italy and that del Toro would bring in some history to portray the original story. Considering all of this, the film may be a bit darker than previous adaptations of the story.
The film features Gregory Mann as Pinocchio and Ewan McGregor voicing Sebastian J. Cricket. The cast also includes Perlman, David Bradley, Finn Wolfhard, Tilda Swinton, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro and Christoph Waltz.
At Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio will premiere at the BFI London Film Festival 2022 and hit theaters on November 25. The film will be available to stream on Netflix from December 9, 2022.
