She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is halfway through Episode 6. We’ve seen quite a few villains already, including Titania, the Wrecking Crew and Donny Blaze, who wasn’t exactly a villain but the opposition during a case. However, in future episodes of She-Hulk, the MCU will introduce a horde of weird and obscure villains from Marvel comics. Now, not all of these villains will get episodes dedicated to themselves. After all, there are only a few episodes left in this season. Nevertheless, they will make an appearance. One of those villains will be Porcupine. Yes, he is exactly what he looks like. A supervillain with a sharp suit.
Clip of She-Hulk showing Porcupine
During episodes 2 and 3 of She-Hulk, we see Jennifer Walters representing Emil Blonsky alias Abomination. Emil Blonsky is a changed man who has met seven kindred spirits through the prison pen pal program. Also, his plan after being paroled is to go to a ranch and spend his days in peace, meditating and leading others on a spiritual journey. The clip shows exactly that. Blonsky basically started a support group for bad guys. In a previous trailer, he was also shown to have written a book. The villains that are part of this spiritual journey for “Seize Your True Power” are Porcupine, Man-Bull and the Matador or El Aguila. As you can see in the corner, She-Hulk came across these villains and their therapy session. And I can’t wait to see his reaction.
Who is Porcupine?
Porcupine therefore had several iterations. There are in particular Alexander Gentry and Roger Gocking. However, based on the spiky costume in the She-Hulk promo clip, this version of Porcupine appears to be from Earth-9047. However, as seen in the case of Exceed, Marvel combines multiple iterations of the same character to create a fusion villain. We assume the same will be done for Porcupine. He will be a mixture of Alexander Gentry and Roger Gocking. So let’s explore these two versions of Porcupine.
Alexander was a weapons designer for the United States Army who once decided to create a costume inspired by a porcupine. He then dove headfirst into a life of crime. His main enemies were Hank Pym aka Ant-Man and Janet Van Dyne aka Wasp. Porcupine had successfully robbed a high-security bank and was one of the villains to crash Reed Richards and Sue Storm’s marriage to Doctor Doom. However, at the end of his run, he also sided with the heroes and aided Captain America in his mission.
After Gentry’s death, Roger Gocking secured the rights to the Porcupine name and took over the mantle. He too aided Doctor Doom during his conquest of Wakanda in search of Vibranium. Gocking joined a group of supervillain team-ups with equally lesser-known members in the Marvel Universe. He is best known for babysitting Spider-Woman. With She-Hulk’s help, he reformed and became her sidekick and even became a better father to her daughter. He and Jess shared a special bond that was truly adorable.
As for the powers, they stemmed almost entirely from the costume. The large metal armor acted as a great defense against attacks. The suit also hid several offensive weapons, including quills that Porcupine could shoot like arrows and cause quite a bit of damage. Indeed the costume could also release toxic gases to weaken the adversaries.
His role in She-Hulk
While Porcupine will make an appearance in She-Hulk, it will likely just be a cameo and nothing more. Marvel is trying to introduce some of the quirkiest and weirdest comic book villains into the MCU and that’s what the Porcupine will fulfill. You might be wondering why Marvel is scratching the barrel for such C-list villains when there are more important ones to explore. Well, the answer is quite simple. She-Hulk, even in the comics, has a history of dealing with dark and goofy villains. These characters give the comic its characteristic humor and lightness. Plus, it’ll be fun to see the MCU turn away from the mainstream and experiment a bit.
