dragon house episode 6 continued after a ten-year time jump in history. A lot has happened off-screen in those ten years. Our favorite characters have undergone a lot of changes. The most drastic change can be seen in none other than Prince Daemon Targaryen. We last saw him in House of the Dragon episode 5 where he killed his wife Lady Rhea Royce and crashed Rhaenyra and Laenor’s marriage. It became quite apparent that he was going to marry Laena Velaryon and he did. Also, his personality has become quite different and he looks nothing like the demon we saw before. On the contrary, he became an even better and more complex character with many layers to him.
Daemon becomes a faithful husband and father
As mentioned earlier, Daemon married Laena Velaryon and even had two daughters Baela and Rhaena Targaryen. When he was married to Rhea Royce, there was no compatibility between the two. Daemon never bothered to stay in the Vale or consummate their marriage. I mean the guy literally killed her, so obviously they weren’t a good match. But with Laena Velaryon, he seems much happier or rather more in tune with her. They are both fierce dragon riders and have had adventures together. Daemon and Laena share mutual respect and even love each other in a way.
The grief of losing Laena can clearly be seen in his eyes as he stands in utter shock. Daemon also seems to have matured considerably and become a decent father. He is seen sitting with Baela and teaching her High Valyrian. It’s a pretty stark contrast to the previous demon with no loyalty and no strings attached. Although he doesn’t spend much time with Rhaena.
His rage and ambition waned
In the episode, he is seen accepting Prince Reggio’s offer to stay in Pentos in return for wealth and prosperity. When confronted by Laena, he claims he is much better off there. He feels more at peace as he is away from the politics of the Iron Throne. It seems his ambition has waned since we last saw him. He grew tired of the constant battle for succession. All Daemon wants is to live his life without responsibilities, to cherish it luxuriously and truly. That coming from the rogue prince must be quite a surprise. It’s really great to see that Daemon is not only enraged, but so much more. In fact, it looks like he’s calmed down a lot. Although it is great, he should never lose the cruelty and rage that is in him.
Loneliness and grief plague Prince Targaryen
The only thing that stands out is that Daemon isn’t entirely satisfied despite what he says. He has been away from home and the people he once called family for a very long time. In fact, he seems to have lost the only two people he ever loved. No matter how much he loves his family including Laena and her daughters, a piece of his heart will always remain at King’s Landing in the Red Keep with Viserys and Rhaenyra. In fact, he mourns his love for Rhaenyra.
Laena, who seems to know him better than anyone, recognizes the fact that he feels alone. She even accepted the fact that she wasn’t the one Daemon really wanted to marry. After all, we know he wanted Rhaenyra to be his wife. What’s interesting is the connection between Daemon and Laena. When she says the previous statement, instead of shutting up or dismissing it, he sympathizes. Daemon tries to stop Laena from feeling this. Pretty unusual if you ask me.
Laena urges him to accompany her to the Red Keep so that both of them can meet their brothers. But it didn’t help. With Laena now dead, it will be quite interesting to see how Daemon raises Rhaena and Baela. He seems like a decent dad in this episode, but only time will tell what happens next. Hopefully his character continues to grow but never loses the fire within him.
