The Munsters Review: Worst Movie of the Year

The Munsters Where The Addams Family? Growing up, this was a question kids asked frequently, and the answer often resulted in a tough or heated debate. Both of these shows originally aired long before my time, but thanks to Nick at Night’s glorious, classic TV programming, I was able to grow up on some of the greatest sitcoms TV has to offer. I always preferred The Munsters. Watching a family of monsters (who were obtusely unaware of their own monstrosities) interact with their neighbors on idyllic Mockingbird Lane never gets old. Well…until now.

Rob Zombie drops young Eddie Munster to bring us a prequel story about the early stages of Herman and Lily’s relationship. When a mad scientist determined to create the perfect living creature mistakenly uses the brains of a failed comedian, Herman Munster is born. His love for stand-up comedy shows up in his new body, and he’s determined to be a star. However, these plans are put on hold once he meets Lily and the two fall into a whirlwind romance.

Rob Zombie, best known for his horror movies like House of 1000 Corpses and The devil’s rejections, fails to capture the charm or humor of the classic sitcom. Zombie is clearly looking for a tone or style here; the problem is that it doesn’t seem to know how to find it. Nothing in The Munsters the film never manages to capture the look or feel of its source material. Instead, the story unfolds through goofy, erratic purple camera movements.

The best moments of The Munsters the series stem from their interactions with the human world. They are outcasts, unable to recognize that their gruesome appearances are frightening. However, for some reason, Rob Zombie chose to ignore this aspect of the series and instead sets ninety percent of the film in Transylvania, filled with a monstrous wall-to-wall living a normal life. How I suffered through this film, and I do means suffered, I wondered who this film was aimed at. The fans who grew up with The Munsters the series will surely hate everything the film has to offer. And fans of Zombie’s previous work will be baffled by what they see.

Zombies The Munsters looks like a high school, film production project. It sounds like what a teenager might think classic television was meant to look like. The performances are atrocious, the lighting and cinematography are nauseating, and there isn’t a pleasant moment from start to finish. Previously I believed Fire starter was the worst movie of the year. Then I saw Pinocchioand now i have seen Gatherings. This is the worst move of the year (so far). 1.5/10
