Fans who were disappointed with the final season of Game of Thrones (GOT) were currently being dealt with HBO’s latest offering – House of the Dragon (HOTD). Avid fans of George RR Martin’s world of ice and fire rejoice all over the world. However, do you know that there are many more GOT spin-offs currently in development at the studio? The best part, the author is actively involved in almost all of them. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at them one by one.
Snow
Even though the rightful heir to the throne, Jon Snow, ended up returning north beyond the wall at the end of GOT. His brother Bran Stark became the ruler of the Seven Kingdoms, and fans were left…well, empty. Something was wrong with the end of the series, it was unsatisfying. However, things will soon change.
The author of the series of books, himself declared in his Blog – “Our working title for the show is Snow.” He added that the idea for the series was pitched by actor Jon Snow. (Kit Harrington) himself. Martin further states that –
I can’t tell you much more, not until HBO gives me the green light. I can’t tell you the names of the writers/showrunners, as it hasn’t been cleared for release yet…but Kit brought them in as well, his own team, and they’re great.
Although the show hasn’t passed the development stage yet, it seems very likely that it will be a project that HBO will prioritize.
10,000 ships
After HOTD, the next most likely prequel series to hit TV is – 10,000 Ships. Set 1000 years before the events of GOT, even before the events of HOTD, the series focuses on the founder of Dorne – Princess Nymeriawho started Dorne of Essos. Nymeria is accompanied by the Rhoynar survivors on his fleet of 10,000 ships after the devastation suffered by the Valyrian dragonlords. Their journey takes them to many different countries around the summer seadinosaur infested jungles of Sothoryos, to summer islandsbefore finally migrating to Dorne.
The development of the series has been confirmed for a long time since the Deadline in 2021. It was even announced that the screenwriter Amanda Segal was commissioned to write a pilot script for the series. It remains to be seen whether HBO will commission the filming of a pilot episode. The series likely won’t debut until 2024. In March 2022, George RR Martin provided an update on the series in another personal post. Blogsaying –
The other is TEN THOUSAND SHIPS, the Nymeria series. Amanda Segel, our showrunner, delivered some drafts, and we’re moving forward.
A Dunk and Egg Story
Author George RR Martin wrote three short stories set 90 years before GOT. The news is centered on Ser Duncan, the Great (also known as “Dunk”), and a young Aegon V Targaryen (aka “Egg”) on their early adventures. The series is called, The Tales of Dunk and Egg and will include the following books – 1998’s The Hedge Knight, 2003’s The Sworn Sword and 2010’s The Mystery Night. A one-hour serial adaptation is currently in development, but details are scarce.
In 2021, the news of the development of the series at HBO was announced by Variety themselves. However, so far no writer or talent has been attached to the project yet, and fans are waiting for an official announcement regarding this series.
9 voyages or the sea serpent
Steve Toussaint leaves a remarkable impression as Lord Corlys Velaryon aka The Sea Snake in the ongoing HOTD series. He was one of the most enigmatic members of the King’s Council as Lord of the Ships of Viserys. However, Corlys gained the reputation of The sea serpent through his many infamous adventures as a naval warrior. His travels take him and his crew to the far reaches of the known world. Polar waste from the shivering sea in the north to the extreme east of the Jade SeaCorlys becomes the first man from the Seven Kingdoms to travel directly beyond Qarth to Yi Ti’s Golden Empire himself. During his travels, young Corlys acquires so much exotic wealth that he becomes the richest man in Westeros.
This is what the upcoming series – The sea serpent will apparently focus on the maritime adventures of Corlys. The series was originally called – the 9 voyages because it was supposed to focus on Corlys’ famous nine voyages of exploration to lands beyond Westeros. However, taking into account the 10,000 ships was also under development, the working title was changed to The sea serpent to avoid having too many numbers in its titles. Deadline even reports that Bruno Heller (creator of The Mentalist, Rome, and Gotham) was hired to pen a pilot episode.
Yi Ti’s Golden Empire – Anime
First reported by The Hollywood Reporter, another less well-known HBO spin-off is an anime series focused on exploring Yi Ti’s golden empire located in Essos. The empire hasn’t been explored much in GOT, except for a moment when the name appears briefly in Season 7. In the scene, Gilly, while in the Citadel of Old Town, reads a copy of The World of Ice & Fire, and there is one visible. page mentioning Yi Ti by name. Additionally, Lord Corlys Velaryon sailed to Yi Ti 200 years before the War of the Five Kings in Westeros.
The Yi Ti Kingdom is inspired by many stories from Southeast Asia (especially Imperial China). The anime series will focus on this lesser known realm, it is grand and significant in the world of ice and fire.
How many of these series will eventually see the light of day is a question of the future. But for now, as fans, we’re glad to know that the world of Westeros isn’t going away anytime soon.
